Jumbo Putter Grip

fixing swing weight after installing one?
I recently purchased a Scotty squareback 33" 360g putter. My previous putter, an Odyssey Sabertooth, had a Winn Jumbo grip (124g) on it and I liked the feel of the bigger grip. I've read a lot of posts about how installing a jumbo grip will decrease the swing weight 1 for every 3 grams of grip weight. How accurate is this? Also how can I bring the swing weight back to where it was before installing a jumbo grip? If I add 60g to the grip end will adding 20g to the club head fix the putter swing weight?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I don't know the exact amount you would have to add, but I've used lead tape on the sole to bring the weight back. I've also heard of people filling the shaft with sand or other material and "corking" it to keep in place. I think the custom shop offers 30gr replacement weights also that will help.

I just lowered the swing weight of my current putter by about six swing points (E-4 to D-9) by adding a 10 gram counterweight in the butt end and shortening the putter by one half inch.

I have installed WINN MIDSIZE grips on old putters and have watched the swingweight DECREASE by several swing weight points with no other changes. I quit using that particular grip as a result, as less weight on the head end makes my stroke very inconsistent (mostly on the back swing).

I have a buddy that has a TIGER SHARK oversized grip on his putter and it feels like there is nothing on the head end, not good for me.

Wow, six points with just 10 grams, that seems like a lot. Thats one of the things i am worried about.

I have also looked at the TS grip but like you said it's heavy. I also looked at the biglite but haven't heard many good reviews. I do like the jumbo grips, but maybe the sacrifice of feel and distance control, due to the decreased swing weight, just isn't worth it.

This is my first scotty putter and i don't want to loose the great feel that it has. I'm not a big fan of the grip that it comes with and I would like to change it. Any ideas for someone who has a problem with wrists breaking down?

Also, does anyone know how heavy the Red Cameron Cord grip is that comes with the Squareback?

Check out this video of Woody Austin using the original 85 gram biglite on the then prototype Scotty Cameron Fastback. I believe he won that tournament. I think I'll give the Biglite 3 a try, only 70 grams and a pistol shape. Thanks for the advise, I'll let you know how it is.

Does the the biglit 3 on the squareback still feel pretty firm or does the size of the grip mute some of the feel?

It feels very firm! All my buddies love that setup, I just am having alignment issues so that is why I went to the Sabertooth. I can tell you that I am looking forward to SC's big alignment mallet!

Personally I'd go with the Tiger Shark Oversized aka MIDSIZE grip....those jumbo grips are out of control IMHO. If I owned a Scotty putter(god help me to get one please!!!! ;)) I would keep a scotty grip on it, but that's just me. I tried the Tigershark oversize on my Ping Karsten Anser 2 and well it lasted one round, and I had the shop remove it and replace it with a Cameron Studio Design grip(don't ask lol).

Whatever grip you get, make sure it doesn't mess up your stroke, and your enjoyment of the Cameron putter. :)

Peace.

The Tigershark grip is bigger than the Biglite 3; and weighs 2.5 times as much. Another characteristic that some do not like about the Tigershark is the sponginess of the grip. If you want firm, bigger (taking the wrists out of the stroke) and a weight that won't mess up the swingweight of the putter; the only one I have found is the Biglite.

Not selling for the company, just telling you what I have found after a year of searching and trying.

KF - Can you tell me more about the Biglite 3. Specifically, did it change the feeling of the putter...did it mute the feel. I just ordered one to put on my new Yes! Tracy FC, however I may not install it if it dampens the feel too much. Is the foam stuff they use firm or soft like a Winn? Did you have any swing weight issues after you installed it? It would be pretty cool to get one in the sub 70 gram range!

I got mine installed on the scotty and it didn't really mute any feel, still pretty firm. The foam is pretty hard not at all soft like the winn. The shop had a heck of a time installing it because it doesn't flex. I added some lead tape to make the head a little heavier but not because of the grip so you'll probably be fine there. It is a lot bigger than the winn jumbo which i wasn't expecting. Great grip just too big for me, i like the size of the winn so I think I'll try that and see if i can get the swing weight back by sending the club to the scotty studio or adding some lead tape. Hope this helps.
