DIY Paintfills

Well after spending about 3 hours going through the process of changing the paintfills on my 2 SC gamers and taking pictures throughout the process, I came on the forum and realized there was an abundance of posts on paintfills. So I decided to post my pics anyways, didn't seem like there were too many pics up showing the process. It's really very easy and unless you are a meticulous worker like myself and can't get to sleep at night it should not take you very long.

The basic supplies are Testors paint (I got the variety pack but you can get whatever colors you want for real cheap), a couple of brushes, Testors brush cleaner (paint thinner will do just the same), masking tape, and a roll of paper towels, and of course the clubs you're going to repaint.


The masking tape will help when you need to paint spots one color that are close to other spots you want to paint another. The tape will also help when you wipe the excess paint away. Basically I just "dabbed" some paint with the brush onto the spot making sure the paint got into the area completely. Don't worry about excess paint becuase you can wipe this away with the brush cleaner. When you wipe away the excess just make sure not to use too much of the brush cleaner and to try and use a clean side of the paper towell each time you wipe (even in the same area with the same color).





This was about midway through the process. Both of the putters I was doing were about halfway done at this point. The Newport 2 in the pic hasn't dried enough to wipe away all of the excess yet. I found that when you do 2 colors real close together, as with the SCOTTY here, once both colors have dried you can then take some brush cleaner and wipe away the area around it without worrying about the colors mixing.



So once all of the colors, which was pretty much just green and yellow for me GO DUCKS, had dried I took some of the brush cleaner on a towell and wiped the whole head down and cleaned up any of the stubborn paint that made it through till the end. The finished products, in my opinion, look extremely professional and were done by a starving college student on a slim budget. So here they are.....

My method is pretty much the same except instead of paints and brushes I find it just as easy to use nail polish because it comes with a brush built in and there are endless colour choices from white, red, black to weird colours even sparkly glittery colours (if that's what you're in to) and nail polish remover to wipe away the overfill.

 

The great thing about nail polish is that it dries realyl quickly and once it's dry it is really tough and lasts for ages.

 

Your method is great too, and the resluts are amazing.

Looks great. How do you wipe off the excess without having the fill area effected as well?

Excellent work! Only suggestion would be to pour a bit of the thinner into a cup so you don't contaminate the whole jar or just pour a bit on a paper towel ... a little goes a long way. Toothpicks make great brushes also!!! (Nice putters too by the way)

Thanks, when you wipe off the excess the paint that is in the fill area will stay there as long as you do not use too much thinner or brush cleaner.

I used automotive touch up paint on mine and they have a pen on one side and built in brush under the cap.

I think I will use nail polish to add a glittery effect. Great pictures! Now if I could only find the time to do this myself.

those do look very good though, just wondering if you could let me know what you did to remove the original paint so i can try it out on some of my clubs

Where can I get these testors paints? I haven't heard of them. Great job on the putters. Hopefully mine turn out the same way.

hobby stores and craft stores usuall have the testors paints. I also use goo be gone to remove the extra paint. Works great!!!!

I just purchased a Newport Studio stainless that has been refinished by black oxide service. I love the putter but I'm not crazy about the paint fill (purple and green). I would like to give it a UK Wildcat touch with blue and white. I had a couple questions:

 

1) Using the techniques above, will the brush cleaner or paint remover effect the black oxide finish?

 

2) Do I need to use paint thinner to to remove the existing purple and green paint, or should I just paint over it?

 

3) Is there any chnace of screwing up the putter, I am curious if I should practice by painting a Ping Anser that I have first.

This technique works well...i just finshed my mizuno irons...hope to have pics soon. Only one problem is that i got some bubbles the first time around. its better to use cloth made for cleaning glasses, because it has no texture and leaves no marks on the paint. Pics Soon!!!!!!!
