black vs nickel vs starshot
Understand the black finish has some major problems with durability.

Nickel too? Read some reports of the nickel coming off, others who say it hasn't been a problem and stands up well.
So, HOW'S IT HOLDING UP?

Just put in an order for a D66 so I can change to the "starshot" if I have to. What's the feedback from folks who have the starshot? Starshot look nice or is it cheap looking?

Have to say, I really like the nickel finish. But want the putter to look good next year as well.

Looked around the forum but the discussions are mainly about glare and the black finish problems.

THANKS!

I like starshot the best. I think it looks great. Basically a darker bead blasted finish. I have it on my center shaft redwood, looks great!

Starshot has an upcharge, and Guyson doesn't. Don't get nickel, as you cannot send it in to Ping to have tungsten weights added, or have the color changed (if you plan on changing later).

I have both the Anser and ZB with the nickel finish and both are holding up very well. The Anser was purchased as soon as the Redwood line was available, the ZB last year. I have the D66 in the black finish and the only problem I have with it is if there is any grit on the ball at all it will eventually eat into the black finish.

I've seen several post about the standard nickel finish not wearing well, but have never seen any pictures so I'm a little puzzled what might be happening. I'm very meticulous with my clubs, so maybe that's why mine have held up so well.

As you can see with my signature I have the starshot. I have had zero problems with the finish. No glare, looks good at address and no signs of wear. I have used the putter for a little over a season and have used it about 3 to 4 times per week in all types of weather.

I keep my clubs in good shape, meaning I am sure to clean and dry after each use and they are kept indoors (not in a car trunk) between rounds.

I agree. Puzzled is a good word.

How's the glare? Problem?

Put my order on hold until I get to the bottom of this

Anyone else with the nickel finish care to share your experience?

Very very interesting!!!!!

Just got off the phone with Ping Canada.

Ping will stand behind the nickel finish. If there's any problems, just bring it back to where you purchased it. They will send it back to Ping who will have it repaired/replaced.

Also, happen to know the guy in customer service who I talked to. He's had the the nickel finish since before the Redwoods went public and he says his is in great shape. "Like the day I got it". That must be at least two years? He does say you have to take care of it. Keep it in the cover and keep her dry. Also said the glare has not been a problem for him.

That gives me confidence. NICE :clapping:

oscar_golfer, You can have the ping wrx dept. do pretty much anything, for a price. for my taste the nickel jut had too much glare in the bright sunlight.

Similar to the above poster I also had these issues with the black finish. Didn't hold up well at all and was marked/scratched after only a few weeks use and I take good care of my putters. Real shame as it looked great, but my advice would be to steer clear.

I like the Starshot as an alternative.

Agreed! Looks like there is a consensus about the black finish not holding up.

Some seem do have a problem with the nickel, while others are fine. Might come down to care. But, as long as Ping backs it up, if you like the nickel there's no reason not to try it.

Starshot is definitely a very good finish. No body has any complaints.

I am going to demo a driver on Thursday. If it kicks my current out of the bag, I'll be sporting a new big dog. Otherwise, a Ping Redwood D66 2* up with a nickel finish an Iomic grip will be ordered.

Unless of course, someone talks me out of it :D

LOL you're right! I do like the nickel the most.

But if it was going to be a mess after a season or so, no way. But since enough folks have had good experiences with it and on top of that Ping backs it up, then yes, nickel it is. :clapping:

Good choice on the nickel finish and no, never ever had a problem with glare while using it.
