New Shaft for the Fastback

If you find a way to put a straight shaft on your fastback, I'd be interested in knowing... I love the fastback, but my stroke is more straight back and thru so a straight shaft would be better. Please keep me informed :)

Not really. I've sent a PM and a couple emails over the past few days to LaMont (golfluvzme), the resident putter expert but he's been MIA.

I cant get a hold of LaMont either. Ive sent him 3 PM's and 3 emails and I haven't received word. This doesn't seem like him but I really need some work done. This is a great idea for the fastback and am interested as well.

im pretty sure lamont is super busy right now, and putter refinishing isnt his only job

I am not sure what the shaft will do but there are others on here that can tell you for sure. If you are a SBST putter and the straight in shaft gives the putter a 5:30 toe hang like the original poster wants, then it won't be the best for your stroke. The double-bend shaft it comes with is pretty close to being face balanced and will be better for the SBST stroke.

So... a straight shaft will not work on the fastback?

I have more of an arc to my putting stroke which is why I want to attempt this. Love the look and feel of the Fastback but need a little toe flow. One of the pics of McIlroys putter leads me to believe this could be an easy project but I don't know enough to be 100%.

As for being able to do it, I am not really sure. Seems like you would be able to, but I don't know if the way the hole is drilled into the head will allow for a straight in shaft to come in at the angle it would need. For what it would do to the putter; I think it would add more toe hang to it than the double-bend shaft. Whether it will get to 5:30 or not I am not sure. Since Rory's did not enter in the head in the center it will certainly give it toe hang. I heard that the 2.6 has about 5:30 toe hang and it seems its straight in shaft enters the head about the same place as Rory's.

Mpugh, what I was saying was that you were wanting to do this for a SBST stroke and if doing this gives the putter 5:30 toe hang it probably wouldn't be best for that kind of stroke. The double bend shaft keeps the putter head almost face balanced and that is best for a SBST stroke.

Sure thing....no problem. Like I was saying though, I am not really sure what the straight in shaft would do to the putter. I do know that the standard fastback shaft is pretty close to face balanced. Good luck.

I don't think it is possible to put a strait shaft into the existing spud on the heel of the putter, I think the existing spud goes strait up from the topline. The only way it would work is if you could get a strait shaft in and bend the spud 20 degrees to get a playable lie angle and the toe hand would probably be 6:00. A single bend shaft might work. I know Tom Slighter can do the work to get it where you want it. The existing shaft needs to be pulled out and the old spud ground off, and a new one fabricated and welded a little off center towards the heel and a strait shaft put in. It's basically a welded center shaft putter that's not quite in the center of the face, so it has some toe hang. The putter will probably have to be re-bead blasted too.

I had Tom put a center shaft on a Squareback for me and it turned out great. That one didn't have any toe hang but I know he can do it. I also had the Black Oxide finish put on it as well. I wish I had saved the pictures to post.

The single bend putter shaft will be your best bet and also the cheapest way to go. I don't know how much toe hang it will give you, but it will give you more than it already has.
