Has anybody seen or played the bang-o-matic CNC forged club heads? http://www.banggolf.com/prodgroup.asp?id=IBM

Being a left handed golf looking for a component set of forged heads is very difficult. Maltby doesn't make any, Golfsmith has discontinued the 675 series (well they are not available on the website)

However, i can't find anybody that has tried these. If anybody has seen or hit them, are they a players iron? Game improvement iron? super game improvement?

I hit a set of mizuno MX200's the other day and loved the way they felt. I like that forged feel. However, the DIY in me wants to try forged.

They look like shovels. Are you looking for blades or forged cavity backs? The thick soles on these clubs are going to bounce off the turf like crazy and are meant for "not so good" ball strikers.

I would stick with the Mizunos, or check out the lefty section here for some forged clubs on here. There is a nice set of Cleveland TA3 forged clubs for sale right now.

in that case, what is the benefit of forged clubs?

You can charge a whole lot more money for the same design you can make in a cast club...

There is some grain alignment that goes on during the forging process that may lead to a better quality product in the end - though that debate will never end. It's a more expensive process and leads to much higher margins on the end product as well - so you can make your own mind up on the value there to the manufacturer...

The forging process actually work hardens the steel used while being forged. After the heads are forged, they are heated and cooled in a controlled process called annealing . This is where the final hardness is established.

Cast clubs may skip the anneal step - though higher quality cast clubs will also be annealed after they are fully formed - setting the hardness in exactly the same way as forged clubs.

If you and I could tell the difference in the steel used in cast and forged irons, no one would ever need to purchase a Rockwell hardness tester. Alas, humans are not sensitive enough to be able to tell the difference in hardness without said tester.

A quality cast head and a quality forged head in the same design will feel exactly the same when you hit them and have exactly the same playing AND bending properties.

Lower quality cast heads may have voids in the casting as well - but these are not present in high quality castings.

  • 10 years later...

I recently built this Bang O Matic Center Cut irons shafted with Recoil 95 graphite shafts.

Why I did this?

I had no idea if Bang O Matic CC irons are good or not, but I had these rather expensive shafts lying around, so I just wanted to experiment.

The sole is definitely thick, but the top line looks very sleek.

The head is forged so it is somewhat compact in size rather than it's big (shovel)

Lofts are moderate (32 deg for #7).

As the weight is distributed at the bottom of it, it's easy to get the ball high.

My swing speed for the driver is average 100 mph.

Wow, this iron heads combo'ed with Recoil graphite shafts, feels very smooth. My distance is no shorter than my other irons (TM M1, PRGR RS).

I wouldn't recommend others to build these irons, because there are tons of other options, but I posted this because I thought someone might be interested in.

Very easy to hit, high launching, forgiving, nice looking (not from your bag, but at address), very good iron heads if paired with right shafts.
