I try to work out everday, usually ends up like 5 or 6 days a week. I don't necessarily lift all of the time though. I do various things for my core and then I run 3 miles every other day. I have started working once a week with a personal trainer and that has definitely helped. I haven't gotten to play golf with this weather though, I'm hoping the work has payed off.

I work out every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday at my club every week. I have been doing this since early December. I have gained ~5 lbs. in muscle since then. I do cardio but a lot of weight training mostly. I make sure I keep strecthing so I stay limber. I do 3 sets, 10 reps for everything. I take EAS Myoplex Lite right after I work out. It's a protein shake/supplement.

yeah i bench like 150 for like 10 reps maybe on a good day, and still hit 3 bangers without too much extra effort, weight lifting is extremely overrated for golf

This is somewhat true. I think I read it on here, that Tiger's distance really hasn't changed since he started lifting extensively. He is cut up now, but hasn't gotten any longer. Part of this has to do with the fact that benching and curling don't make your drives longer, its all about core strength.

Yep, I lift 3 times a week. But mainly focus on cardio. Gotta get in shape for those 36 a day tournys. Otherwise Ill be laying in the middle of the fairway on #27.

I'm exactly like you. I run 2 miles every other day, working my way up to running longer. I hope it helps with endurance, after a certain very long walking golf course kicked my butt last year I've been on a mission to get to the point where I can play that course again and have the energy to do another 18.

I mix in a day for legs, a day for arms and shoulders, and a day for the core. I am not looking to bulk up or hit the ball further, I just want to keep those muscles ready to fire.

  • 2 weeks later...

in high school last year i went to the gym at 5 am everyday. i already worked out a lot before that, but i took exercising more serious and i won my state tourney. might have been coincedence, but i think it made me mentally tougher just to get outta bed at 4 15 everyday then go to school right after the gym.

Your not the kid who beat Tursky in the playoff in the ToC? Hartman?

no. sorry. i should have been clearer. i did not win the TOC i won the sectional/group. that playoff was pretty sweet though that was a nasty bunker shot he hit to clinch it. i was right there with everyone else watching lol. i hated that course, you play in that? i could not putt those greens for $**t. i had 7 3 putts lol to shoot 83.

EDIT: to be clearer i won group 1 state champ title the week before at spookybrook.

I dont think its that important... I've seen string beans hit it 30 yards further than me, and I'm a big kid.

But I think working on cardio is the most important, oh and the core.

No i didnt play in it cause my coach decided to send the senior to states instead of me cause we didnt qualify as a team. I go to immaculata but I played with tursky all year.

yea i wanted to play with him. i heard he was real good and everything. that round was so boring though you really did not miss much. it took 6 1/2 hrs to play. you had to wait every tee and fway and everything

Ive been lifting for 4 years and playing golf for 8. My max bench is 295, leg press 900, and squat 400. Height 5'10 weight 190....Ive gained a lot of distance as Ive gotten bigger but I have noticed an even bigger increase in control, especially out of the deep rough

I lift with some BIG guys, and even those guys can't leg press 900. That sounds fishy too me. 400 squat i can believe...but 900 is a TON to press.

I agree, I've seen absolutely huge guys that can't come close to that. Max bench also really means nothing for golf, bench is pretty much useless, your pecs get huge, losing upper body flexibility, and unless your pushing something, your not using them that much.

I'd encourage any junior, high school, collegiate golfer who is interested in starting a weight training program to give P90X a try. I started doing it almost 3 weeks ago. I played golf today and I have never been more flexible in my entire life, and I'm only 24.

The chest is extremely important, by the way.

My personal trainer leg presses 1080 so its possible and he is only 5'7 but he does this stuff for a living.
