altering wedge swing weight

52% wedge is heavier in total weight than PW, SI. It is equal to that of LW.

However the 52 feels lighter than the other clubs. (4 out of five people incorrectly picked 52 as lightest, including me.)

This then must be a swing weight issue. The club does not feel right and I am very conscious of it when I swing it. I tend to pull it straight left of target by a few yards. How do you reduce the swingweight of a wedge? THe oem specs on my irons - 2-LW (Titleist) show all irons weighted at D1. The 52% is D3 - Vokey

thanks

I'm not certain swingweight is your issue---more lofted clubs that are played too far forward in stance will produce the same effect. That being said I'm gonna grab the swingweight scale and put some wedges on to see what I get back for feed-back

I want it to feel like all my other irons when I pick it up and swing it.

Wedges tend to be a bit heavier in swing weight (approx 1-2 points). They also, as I recently found out, play stiffer in flex if shafted with the same shafts as the rest of your irons. These factors can help increase feel on clubs that are often used for partial shots and less than full swings. Have your swing weights checked throughout your set. Ideally your three through nine iron will have the same swing weights, your wedges a little heavier. My swing weights are pretty high across the board. My irons are setup as mentioned. My woods are set with my four matching the irons, three wood two points lighter, and driver four points lighter. To change swing weights, in its most simplest terms, add weight to the head to raise the swing weight, or add weight to the grip end. There is a little more to it, and others should respond with a more detailed explanation of swing weight and the effects of altering it. Hope this helps, good luck...

I had the same problem with the two Nike Forged wedges I added to my Nike Pro Combo set (D-2 SW). The wedges were TT DG S400, and too much of a change in feel from the set's PW at D-2. The clubs are currently at the shop to get TT DG Lite S300 installed. Hopefully this will even them out a bit.

It is interesting to note that according to the July issue of Golf Magazine, Tiger Woods had his two shortest Nike wedges re-shafted for more flex (56 and 60, I believe), so he could get more feel 40, 50 and 60 yards out.

an option for you is you could drill holes into the back of the sole to reduce the weight of the head. davis love iii did this. see link for "whats in bag" at golf digest:

http://www.golfdigest.com/equipment/mybag/...405lovebag.html

also, another option is to add weight in the butt end of the club, either with a shaft plug or lead tape under the grip or below the grip.

i to have the nike pro combos and a 53* nike forged raw wedge. i've got rifle shafts and prefer the heavy feel of the s400 in the wedge. i use the wedge more as a gap wedge and not a lot for feel shots. i have a titleist vokey 60* wedge with dynamic golf wedge flex. much lighter club and lighter feel. great for touch shots.

david pelz recomends using lighter and more flexible shafts for wedges for more feel.

Thanks for the thoughtful response. I hear everything from the wedges should be the heaviest club in the bag (unless of course if you have the new Heavy Putter at 800+ grams) to shafting it like the other irons. In that it will feel stiffer anyway because it is shorter. What I had found myself doing was a longish practice swing regimen to adjust to the heavier and stiffer feel of the wedge. Hence, my change to keep the Nike wedges stiff but a wee bit lighter and closer to the Pro Combo pitching wedge.

It is interesting that the Nike's measured (SW and flex) very similar to my 1966 Wilson Staff Fluid Feel Dyna's which I had been using, and they did not bother me. Likely it was the switch to the lighter and more flexible Pro Combo irons that instigated my change.
