Scotty Cameron Circa '62 #5

Buy of the Day?
So I am wandering around my local golf shop while a buddy picked up a new vokey wedge and have been looking for a putter for quite some time (SBST Stroke).

I stumble across the used section and see a perfect looking Circa '62 #5. So I roll it a few times and it feels great. One pin size rust spot so I figure I can work that would with taking care of it. So I look at the face as I am inspecting it and sure enough - First of 500 stamped right on it! :yahoo: Check the Price - $119.99 :secret:

Grip is like brand new (Even though I don't know if I like it)
Shaft band perfect and even has the sticker of putting baby oil on it.
No head cover or tool.

Did I find a steal even if it doesn't work out on the putting green. :fool: At that point I figured I could most likely game it and if it doesn't work out, which it will (Positive thinking) then I could sell it for $250 to $350? Am I wrong on this assumption?

Also on a side note......

Is this a face balanced putter? (I have read someplaces yes, some no)
Is it legal to add tape to the putter. Looking to get some white pinstriping and add a few sight lines

You definitely got a steal (and an all-around good putter). But $200 might be a more accurate selling price, particularly with rust and no cover. I just saw a 350g Circa 3 go for $200, and I bet a lot of people consider that more valuable.

Still, good pick up!

Haha...I saw that 350g Circa 3 as well. Amazed it sold for that price!

For the Circa 5...I would agree...$175-$200 is about the price range if you decide to flip it. The tough part is that it's a select audience that like the Circa 5 shape. Most people opted for the Circa 2 or 3...so selling the Circa 5 for the $175 mark might be a little tougher.

Still a great fine.

Yeah, with no cover, I think $200 is about all you could hope for. I'd actually pull the grip, sell it sepearely and put a new one on to sell. You may add lead tape to the putter for weighting purposes. But any other tape like electrical tape or masking tape would be non-conforming.

I agree about pulling the shaft/grip, particularly if you're talking about the leather grip.

About the tape, though, you can add sight lines with tape. There was come confusion over the rules, but I contacted the USGA for clarification. Here's the correspondence:

"I apologize for my delayed response.

Effective in 2008, as noted on the blog, we modified the rule prohibiting external attachments to read that some exceptions may be made for attachments that do not affect the performance of the club. We are in the process of refining our guidelines regarding this modified rule and will be placing the guideline in the FAQ and our Guide to the Rules on Clubs and Balls in the near future.

Essentially, with respect to an alignment line or other alignment aid applied to the top or flange of a putterhead, it is now permissible to apply a decal provided the decal was semi-permanent, durable, non-temporary in nature, and conformed to the shape of the head. It may not be applied to the face.

Thanks for your inquiry.

And here was my email to the USGA:

"In the FAQs section, a FAQ concerning Rule 4-2 states the following:

Tape or Gauze Applied to Club

Q. Is it permissible to add tape or gauze to any part of the club?

A. During the round, the playing characteristics of the club may not be changed – see Rule 4-2a.

Prior to the player’s stipulated round, tape or gauze may be applied to the grip of the club provided the application of such materials does not create a waist or bulge – see Appendix II; Part 3.

Tape applied to the club head or shaft is an external attachment which renders the club non-conforming (see Appendix II; Part 1a). The following are exceptions to the prohibition against external attachments provided such applications are made prior to the player’s stipulated round:

Lead tape may be applied to the head or shaft of the club for the purpose of adding weight (see Decisions 4-1/4 and 4-2/0.5)

Tape may be applied to the shaft of the club to protect it.

Decals may be applied to the shaft for identification purposes. These decals may also be covered by clear tape.

I think there is an ambiguity as to whether the exceptions listed are meant to be exclusive. Are the exceptions listed meant to be the exclusive exceptions, or is it permissible also to use pin striping tape (or other types of tape) as an alignment aid on a putter?

This question is prompted by a discussion on the following webpage (http://www.cameroncollector.com/forum/index.php/topic,75248.new.html#new), and I think reasonable minds can differ on what the correct answer is.

Thanks for your attention to this question."
