Good courses in the Baltimore, MD/Wash D.C. area

Recommended Posts

Any recommendations?
I'm starting to plan our summer vacations, and we're goint to be hitting the Baltimore and D.C. area in mid-June. I know Bulle Rock is an exeptional course, I'll check to see how far it is from where we'll be staying.

Can anyone recommend a couple of good daily-fee courses in the area? Don't have to be hard tests, as I am a higher handicapper. As long as the course is well maintained, with an interesting layout, I'm cool. I know there are umpteen sites to get info, but I like asking here, getting it straight from the horse's mouth.

Thanks!

^^^We'll most likely be staying in the inner harbor area of Baltimore, near Camden Yards, and driving to D.C. I'll be getting up bright and early every morning to tee off by 7, so I can be back with the family at a reasonable hour. So I would say I don't really want to drive more than 40 minutes to get to a course.

As far as budget, I'll be playing Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and possibly tuesday. If I can keep it under $125 per round that would be cool.

Hope that helps, thanks!

Bulle Rock is an exceptional course and it is priced that way. It may be tough to get on with the LPGA Championship there in June. Another very good course near Bulle Rock is Beechtree (and about half the price).

Just south of Baltimore is the Compass Pointe complex owned by Anne Arundel County. 36 holes of good (not great) golf at a reasonable price. Also look for South River near Annapolis, Whiskey Creek, PB Dye Club and Worthingon Manor near Frederick or for a decent muni, try Northwest Park (long and wide open) in Wheaton.

There are a lot of courses near DC, but most are private.

Whiskey Creek, Worthington Manor and PB Dye Club are all within 5 miles of each other and all are top notch.

Whiskey Creek is designed by Ernie Els and a great layout with a finishing hole that is memorable, if nothing else. It's a par 5 with the ruins of an old house in the middle of the fairway. I think it would be a better hole without the ruins.

Worthington Manor may be the toughest. The USGA always holds US Open qualifying there. The greens are crazy fast and contoured. You will get to know how important it is when the TV announcers say to keep it below the hole.

PB Dye used to be too tough and they softened it up some. I like the layout a lot - a couple hole are still severe.

These courses are about 40 - 45 minutes from the inner harbor and in the morning, once you get outside the beltway. you will be going against the flow of traffic.

Not to be overlooked is Compass Pointe. Good golf at a good price and within 15 minutes from the inner harbor.

Good luck!

here is the link for bullerock.

All three courses bulle rock, beachtree and mountain branch, are about 20-30 minutes away from each other. I grew up in the baltimore metro area so if you have any questions or need any suggestions pm me and I will be more than happy to help you out. Click on this link and you can see all of the courses in the area. Let me know if you have any questions about any of them.

Big D McGee:

A few others to consider:

Timbers at Troy (about 25 minutes from the Inner Harbor). Great course

and

Waverly Woods (Arthur Hills Designed Course)

There are some great courses up I-70 (but the drive time might be a bit longer) -

Hollow Creek Golf Club (http://www.hollowcreekgolfclub.com/) and

Maryland National Golf Club (http://www.marylandnational.com/) are right next to each other (a mile apart)

PB Dye Golf Club (http://www.pbdyegolf.com/)

Worthington Manor (http://www.worthingtonmanor.com/view.asp?id=136&page=1982)

Also, look for Maryland National near Frederick, as well as the aforementioned University of Maryland Golf Course...

Maryland National, Whiskey Creek, Blue Mash, Worthington Manor, Musket Ridge, and Northwest Park are some of my favorite courses in the area.
