PGM or SDGA or Street Pharmacist?

Recommended Posts

Alright so I am still at a crossroads. I am getting out of the Navy soon (in about 5 months) and am 101% positive that I want a field in the Golf industry. On one hand I am already living in San Diego which means I have access to the San Diego Golf Academy (which I decided a while back I was going to go to) but the problem is that school is 28k, a little pricey for an associates degree at a college that I am not even sure the credits will transfer to another university (not the one the suggest going to). So now I am looking at the 20 colleges that offer the PGM route but am unsure which one would be the best to go through. I want to get my PGA card in the long run and unfortunately SDGA does nothing for that, but in the same token I don't know if I can handle going to school for the 4.5 years for the PGM. Any insight/advice/slap in the back of the head would be greatly appreciated in this ordeal of mine.....

If you want to become a PGA Professional then the only way to do that is through a PGA pro!! The program is like a fraternity!! You have need help from a member to get in!! I would recommend going to talk with a local PGA pro so he can explain it to you a little better than I can!! Tell him your goals & if he is a good guy he will guide you down the path you need to take!! The bad thing about those PGM programs is most of the classes do not transfer to the PGA program so I think they are a waste of time for your goal!! just be prepared to work your butt off for kibble when you start at a golf course as an assistant pro!!! First thing to do is pass the PAT though!! If you can do that you are ahead of the game!!

Umm you do realize that after you graduate from the PGM you get your PGA card right?

As per the PGA website "The PGA Golf Management University Program, a 4.5- to 5-year college curriculum for aspiring PGA Professionals is offered at 20 PGA accredited universities nationwide. The program provides students the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for success in the golf industry through extensive classroom studies and internship experience. When you graduate, in addition to your college degree, you become a PGA member with 100 percent job placement."

Going through a pro isn't the only option...

You realize you put explanation points after each sentence and two of them each time. God that was frustrating.

I vouch for the SDGA being a waste of time, but a friend of mine went and is an assistant pro in FL, so it can be done...

I left the school early and paid most of my loan back, pronto. JMO.

PGM is the best way and you kill two birds with one stone. BS degree and PGA membership. Ferris, New Mexico, Mississippi state or Penn state are the oldest and have the best networks.

SDGA seems like a big waste to me.

I should be receiving all my packets from the different schools in the mail within the next week or so. Right now I am leaning more towards ASU (although I am a U of A fan and HATE ASU) because I want to be able to play year round and not have to worry about hurricanes, tornados, blizzards and the such.

You better be damn sure about your decision if you want to get into the golf industry. Rounds played have been down for years now, courses closing up left and right. With the economy in its current state, it's a risky field to be going into. Good luck. :)

True true about the economy being in the dumps, but the way I figure it is I will be in school for the next 4-5 years so by the time I graduate it should be better....isn't that what Obama promised us? :ok:

Are you being serious about the drug dealer thing??? I can't really tell...

Why do you need a supplier? LOL no I'm not being serious but thank you for the concern. I just threw it in there because that seems to be easier than either going through the PGM program or SDGA. I would never resort to selling drugs.

I did not make it obvious I guess but a lot of schools have PGM programs that have nothing to do with the PGA of America. That is why I was suggesting going through a PGA professional! You need to have some experience working at a course to really know if you want that as a career. As I said before going through a PRO is the most direct route. He will have the answers to all your questions because he has first hand experience.

PS Sorry about the exclamation points it is something I do when I type in a hurry such as at work when I typed that!

Yeah I know alot of schools have a PGM program but the 20 that are PGA certified make you do 16 months of internship under a PGA professional as well. It's basically a win/win situation if you can deal with the 4 1/2 years of school.

If you're considering a PGM program, DO NOT GO TO ASU. Don't get me wrong, when I was looking at schools, the Tempe campus is GORGEOUS. Better yet, the girls are GORGEOUS. But ASU doesn't offer the PGM program at their Tempe location. They stick you on an old AF base about 30-40 minutes from main campus. The place was a dump, there's no surrounding town/night life. You're really just stuck out in middle of the desert.
