Depends on what you're looking for. There are lot of very nice courses around the state, and with some more information would help narrow it down a bit.

Milwaukee area (incl Racine/Kenosha):

Erin Hills

Washington Co

Fire Ridge

The Bog

Brown Deer

Morningstar

Bristolcone Pines

Nagawaukee

Geneva National

Hawks View

Strawberry Creek

Madison/Wis. Dells area:

The Oaks

The Legends of Bergamont

University Ridge

Trappers Turn

Northern Bay

Wild Rock

Sentry World

Fond Du Lac area:

Lawsonia

Mascoutin

Old Hickory

Royal St. Patricks

Sheboygan area:

Whistling Straits

Blackwolf Run

The Bull

..I'm sure I missed a lot. I tried to keep the courses more "upscale". If you look. I've done a few reviews with pictures for this site if you do a search. I'll try to attach the links a bit later.

You can always follow the Golf Digest Greatest Courses (per state):

1. Whistling Straits

2. Milwaukee CC (private)

3. Blackwolf Run

4. Whistling Straits (Irish)

5. Oneida (private)

6. Green Bay (private)

7. Horseshoe Bay

8. Blackwolf Run (Meadow Valley)

9. Sentry World

10. The Bull

(Erin Hills isn't listed because Ron Witten is part of the Golf Digest staff)

Or, GolfWeeks version (a better list IMO):

1. Whistling Staits (Straits)

2. Blackwolf Run (River)

3. Lawsonia (Links)

4. Whistling Straits (Irish)

5. Erin Hills

6. The Bull

7. University Ridge

8. Blackwolf Run (Meadow Valleys)

9. Troy Burne

10. Big Fish

Anyone play Alpine Valley Golf Course?
[/quote]

I used to play it once a summer in an annual scramble, but haven't been there in a few years now.

It has a couple cool holes, but conditions were very poor last time I played. There are much better options in the Lake Geneva area. Hawks View & the Geneva National courses to name a few.

Callaway Rouge ST Max LS 10.5* Ventus Blue 6S
Callaway XHP 15* AD DI 7s
Callaway Apex UW 19* AD DI 7S

Ping Icrossover 4 Kai'li White 80s
Ping S55 Nippon Modus 120x
Ping Glide 50*, 54*, 58*
Byron Morgan DH89

Snell MTB-X or Titleist ProV1

you may know this already, but all the American Club courses have a twilight rate that starts 4 hours before sunset. I've used this rate the last 2 years to play Whistling Straits. If you get the first or second time at twilight, you should finish...at least I have both times. Also, if you don't mind carrying your own bag, you can do that at twilight. So the reduced rate and lack of caddy will save you about $150.

I am 1st twilight spot out.

I will the caddie for the experience as I don’t know when I would come back to play.

I hear Sept is awesome in WI.

What can I expect for weather?

70 degrees, little humidity, lots of sun, and perfect course conditions. Honestly jealous of that itinerary - perfect time of year to make your trip.

If I was living your life here's my options:

Friday morning at The Bull, or

Saturday afternoon at The Bull, or

Sunday afternoon at Washington County, or

Monday...the world (SE WI) is your oyster

Been hearing stupid good things about sand valley. Lawsonia will have to wait.

Had to change it again.

Wednesday - Erin hills

Thursday. Sand valley mammoth.

Friday. Mammoth. Sand valley.

Less traveling.

hmm. Maybe I’ll keep lawsonia Thursday morning and drive over to play mammoth Thursday evening. I just want to hang out and don’t want to drive around.

Well I fly in Wednesday at 9am. Maybe I’ll play lawsonia links 2 rounds on Wednesday on a cart and then play Erin hills Thursday morning with mammoth dunes Thursday evening. I really want to play mammoth twice.

Why do you want to play Mammoth twice? I haven't played it yet, but I doubt it's any better than any of the other high end courses you are playing.

I might not be back in Wisconsin for a long time and heard great things. A well respected golf architect friend told me mammoth was amazing. And that he would rather play mammoth twice over lawsonia. Anyone who played both have suggestions ?

Erin hills on Wednesday won’t feel as rush. I just checked airport to Erin hills. Lawsonia is a bit further and sand valley is definitely further

For a great deal on a fun course, check out Autumn Ridge in Valders, WI. It's about a 20-minute drive from Whistling Straits. Great little hidden gem that's rarely packed since it's a little out of the way. It's almost always in great shape. The tips play at about 6000 yards, but don't let that fool you as it plays longer than that. The course has it's opportunities to bomb and gouge a little, but it's very much a target golf course due to the many ravines that the course is built through and around. There is a ton of not-so-subtle terrain that forces layups short of those ravines and approach shots framed through trees. As a former local, there are a few "shortcuts" you can take over trees on tee shots, but ultimately this course will test your iron play. They have great food at the grill as well (which you can come to expect at most places in the state of Wisconsin, who loves their food).

They used to call Autumn Ridge "Baby Blackwolf" if that tells you anything. Also, word of warning, don't walk Autumn Ridge...but they'll probably remind you of that if you insist when you get there.

Agree with this, except for Baby Blackwolf (just have never heard it called this)... although there is just something about this course that I don't enjoy...

Everyone is raving about Mammoth dunes. Plus replays are a good bit cheaper.

I might just skip Erin hills altogether. Two rounds at lawsonia links on Wednesday with a 9am flight arrival is very possible.

Then make my way up to sand valley/mammoth for Thursday and Friday.
