Game improvement Irons

Opinions?
Looking for some really forgiving irons. I play to about an 18 and all parts of my game are equally bad. My SS is 90 with driver, ballflight tends to be fade, and miss tendancy with the irons is fat/thin or towards the toe.

I have no desire for players irons that I will "grow into". I haven't had that much time free having just re-started my career and I want help hitting greens.

Just looking for some general feedback on any of the following sets:

- Hogan CFT
- Hogan BH5
- Nike Slingshot
- Nike NDS (forgiving enough?)
- Ping ISI
- Ping Zing
- Ping Zing 2
- Ping I3
- TM RAC OS
- Wilson Di5
- Callaway X-12
- Callaway X-14
- Callaway BB (all of them)
- Callaway VFT
- Mizuno MX-17
- Mizuno MX-15
- Mizuno MX-20/23
- Cleveland TA5
- Cleveland TA6
- Cleveland TA7
- Adams GT2
- Adams Idea A1

Thanks for any advice/comments provided folks.

to be honest with you I have not hit many of the irons you have listed. a word to the wise though, you must demo them on a range off the grass to see which irons feel right for you. The first time I was fitted I was like wow , this is how I should be hitting irons! you need to do this or you may very well be unhappy with the outcome. :vava: try a few and narrow down your choices you may be suprised at what you end up with. good luck and remember to take your time and you will be glad that you did..... just my two cents but I am sure many people would agree with this approach

slingshots.

you just can't hit them things fat. from 3-pw they look like hybrids with a lot of loft.

a buddy of mine owns them so i've hit them a few times. it has a very high trajectory and very very very easy to hit. since he's switch to these irons' he's already broken 80 a few times this year from the tips. :vava:

Depends what you are looking for in a GI set. You may want a bigger head but less offset (MX20). You may want tons of offset in a huge head (big berthas). You may want progressive offset (Hogan BH5s). Do you want a softer feel (Carbon steel/431 SS) versus the practically impervious Pings. Stock shafts are also a major part.

My recommendation:

First look at which shape suits you when you address over the ball. No matter what iron you pick you should be first comfortable over the ball. This should limit your choices a little. Then as to offset and sole width/grind.

My "GI" set among my rotation are my Cobra Forged. Biggish heads but still thinnish topline and very little offset with a terrific sole grind. I choose them over MP32s and Z101s at the time only because they have less offset. I didn't mind the bigger-head trade off for the less-offset. I smother all my shots with offset irons.

I'd go for either Nike Slingshot, NDS or X-14's. I noticed you didn't list the Ping G2's, They are definatly my favourite oversized iron by a long way. VERY easy to hit and look nice aswell.

I'm right there with you...G2's should be at the top of your list.

Update.......

Tried a bunch of irons listed above plus a few others and the one that worked the best for me was the Nicklaus EZ-UP. Second was the Slingshots, but the Nicklaus 9I and PW were much cleaner at address. A bonus was the price. The 3-PW set was $380 CAN new. I was willing to spend much more but went with what worked for me with no preconceptions about what sets I would or wouldn't like.

Switched the grips to ribbed Tour Velvets. Stock shafts are True Temper TT Lite XL reg. which work great for me.

Thanks for all the advice guys/gals.

Give the Titleist 804 os a try. I have to say they are the easiest irons I have ever hit. That includes Ping I3, I3+, and X-14s. The longer irons are nice and high. I haven't played in the wind so I can't comment on knockdowns. Being a 15 I don't try to work the ball, but my natural flight is straight to a slight draw.

I only tested the 6i of each brand before buying, Nicklaus and Ben Hogan where ok when properly hit, but harsh feeling and bad direction on mishits...

I do too many mishits, NIKE Slingshots handled them much better...

For a better player, as you surely are, the other two would do fine...

Congrats...  :vava:

For me the Nicklaus were just as forgiving as the Slingshots.

I love your website, very nice work. Quite a family you have!

I'd say Slingshots or Callaway BB 2004 are great bets for what you are looking for.

To be honest and if you don't want to keep buying stuff and just get one set, I'd go

Cobra New Baffler 23, 26

Then buy Cally BB 2004 6-PW

My son has the Slingshots. While they are great, you have no idea where you hit them on the face and they have a zingy feel.

But having said that, I'd also opt for them in 6-PW and get the Bafflers in the 20, 23

I know people that will dropship you some Nikes and you can custom the lengths. You can find Bafflers at good prices.

The above is about as easy as it gets so you can enjoy the game.
