Unbelieveable, I was just coming here to start a thread on this very subject. I've played the old Mac forged cavities since 2002, and I just love them. I've changed some things in my set up recently and need to reshaft the irons I have. I was on Macgregor's staff (I'm a shop jockey) so I got them free, and I was thinking to myself, do I really need to spend all that money to re-shaft them, when I can get a new set for probably about the same price. But I love them so much I might just re-shaft. Anyway, I tried the new titliest 735 CM's, I've never been wild about titliest irons' look or feel, so I wasn't ennamoured with them. I was sniffing around the mac website reading about the new M685. They look great, I hit them briefly in a dome, felt great. So I'm also just wondering if anyone else has any feedback. If you get them or hit them, post an update for us.

I've been playing a set for a month now and have posted about them on a few occasions. They are extremely forgiving and very solid. My index is 5.6 and I shot 33 the first nine I played with them. They knocked the Mp-60's out because they are far more forgiving.

What shafts do you have in them and how do they compare to the softness of the MP60's?? Also, is there much offset in them? I can't seem to find much to look at with em but the look a little like the Mizuno Comp Ez's I had that I loved so much years ago.

Liptrot -- did I read a post from you before where you stated you were able to remove the sticker from the back of the iron? If so, did it change the weighting at all? I'm close to pulling the trigger on these -- narrowed down to these and the J33 combos....and maybe the MP60s.

Lefty -- I'm pretty sure they come stock with the Rifle lite flighted shafts. I talked to a Macgregor rep this weekend and he said that this shafts are only made for Macgregor and these clubs. They have very tight tolerance for the frequency variances between clubs (I'd heard Rifles can sometimes be all over the board frequency-wise). I hit them at the range, and they were very solid. Distance was very good as was the workability. They didn't seem quite as soft as the Mizunos, especially in the longer irons, but the Rifle shaft feels a little better than the DGS300 in the Mizunos -- i feel that helps make up the difference in feel for me.

I am on the fence between these and the LT2 right now.

I have to get to demoing the 2 side by side.. I think it is time to hang these 990's up.

I do not carry 3 iron or 4 iron so I can only comment on 5-W. To me they lookvery much like a forged version of the rac lt or rac lt tour. They are not as soft as the 60's but to me more than make up with their forgiveness which is exceptional. I have always liked rifle shafts and these have performed well for me with what I would call a mid flight. I have been able to hit a nice variety of shots. I was a little worried about the weight since my swing tends to get a little quick but those fears seem to have been unfounded. Overall, I am very happy. The scoring irons are very smooth.

I can't imagine the sticker has any impact on the performance of the club. It's basically a piece of tin that can't even weigh an ounce. All you need is a heating implement, tweezers, and some glue remover. After I remove the decals I will try to post some pictures.

I'd love to see a photo of them with the sticker removed. If I get I set that would be one of the things I would do.

I just can't make up my mind on weither I should spend the money to have a old set of Mizuno Comp Ez's rechromed and rescored or if I should save a little and get a new set of M685's.

The Macgregors do have offset, but not as much as the MP60s.

Club M685 (offset) MP60 (offset)

9i 1.5mm 2.895mm

8i 2.0mm 3.2mm

7i 2.4mm 3.2mm

6i 2.8mm 3.3mm

5i 3.0mm 3.4mm

4i 3.0mm 3.4mm

Any photos with the stickers removed yet?? Anyone have any good photos of the clubs showing offset and/or size comparisons with other more commonly seen irons??

  • 4 weeks later...

they are comparable to the Lt's except they are forged which makes a big difference to me. I have a set of MP-60's and as hard as I tried to love them, I think they are beautiful, I just never found them to be that forgiving. The Ping's are forgiving but way too much offset for me. I would be curious to but them up against a set of LT Tours but I haven't had access to a set. If people give these a shot I think they would really like them.
