Making Your Own Golf Shoes?

Recommended Posts

I bought an awesome pair of Nike Shox Turmoil the other day and love them. Most comfortable shoes I've ever worn. Now they have me thinking, has anyone ever taken a regular pair of shoes and had spikes put in them to play golf in? I Googled and found a temporary thing you glue on but I'm looking for something more permanent.

Not the best idea. I have the Nike Shox golf shoe, super comfortable.

Another idea, since all golf shoes are now soft-spikes, why even bother changing shoes, wear the shoes you want. I played with a kid who played high school golf and a pretty good stick. He wore regular running shoes while he played. It didn't affect his game.

I wouldn't make shoes on your own. Just my $.02

In the old days, pre WWII, when people used to only wear leather soled shoes, not air soled shoes LOL.......golfers used to put nails through the soles of the shoes for traction. since metal spike arent alloed at most coures now this is a moot point. I dont know when the golf shoe came to market that was constructed with screw in spikes. I do know that trying add spike to a shoe not designed for it seems a little silly, most modern running shoes or waking shoes have enough traction to play decent golf with, however I wouldnt want to use them on a hill course right after the moring dew or a rain shower. Why the flaming? DIY stuff is fun as long as you're willing to end up having to throw out a $100+ pair of shoes if it doesn't go well. My biggest concern would be the spike mounting points. Making a semi permanent spike by grinding the plastic threads off a spike and adhering them to the bottom would be the least shoe destroying way. They'll just be a PITA to change. If you want to get fancy, get metal threaded spikes and some threaded brass sleeves from Lowes (specialty hardware bin), drill holes for the sleeves in the sole, place and adhere the sleeves, use silicon to prevent leakage, and screw in the spikes. I've never tried to manufacture anything with golf aside from club building, but I am guilty of looking at things on my Jeep, deciding it would look cooler with a change, grabbing the tools, and going to town. The first cut is always the hardest :)

I tried to turn my old Nike Shox into cycling shoes, but found that my speedplay cleats wouldnt stay in the screw holes I made. Even green loctite wouldn't keep them in. Now I just buy shoes that were designed for the purpose I want.

The guys/gals at roadbikereview.com flamed me to no end for asking how to do it, and now that I think about it, I deserved the heat. What a stupid idea I had.

Got me thinking, I could take my old Mizuno golf shoes, grind down the tungsten spikes, then use them for bowling...I am pumped, I never thought I would ever use them again. Thanks OP for the inspiration.

If I were you, I wouldn't post about your creation at the bowlingboards forum, that's where I took a major flaming. Regardless, I'm going to shoot you a pm about how to get your Mizuno golf shoes resoled, they should be really pimp on the lanes!

I really like the Footjoy spikeless shoes. Do you think I could glue some spikes on those?

I took an old pair of FootJoy Classics to the shoe repair and had him refashion them into a kick-a** pair of mandals. Very comfy for rounds of golf in the summer, and I get a little sun on my toes when I play!

Actually, it's funny you should mention this - I did a similar DIY project earlier this year.

I have a favorite pair of leather mandals that I've had for years. Mind you, I've worn them so much in hot, desert-like conditions that they smell worse than a barn cat that's been dead for three weeks - but they are so comfortable that I just can't give them up.

Anywho, I got to thinking one day on the links that I wish I was wearing my comfortable - yet disgusting smelling - mandals. My feet were hotter than all get-out in my FootJoy Classics, and I wished I could create a suitable pair of spiked mandals that I could wear on the course for traction during my violent transition at the top of the swing.

Here's the idea I came up with - since the soles of my leather mandals were slick from years of wear, I had the perfect base for creating a reliable traction surface. I stopped in Home Depot and purchased a 4 FL OZ bottle of Elmer's Rubber Cement. The cap on the bottle has an application brush - so it worked perfectly.

I then applied a thin, yet broad, layer of rubber cement on the soles of my mandals. Next - I simply put them on and walked around for 30 paces or so on a sand/gravel road near my course. The gravel, of course, sticks to the rubber cement. I then took a seat in the grass, and allowed the sand and gravel and rubber cement to bond to the soles of my mandals. Instant traction!!!

Now, the gravel is prone to wear off/fall off after use. So, I simply keep a 4 OZ bottle of Elmer's rubber cement in my golf bag.

After one of my playing partners witnessed me reapplying some rubber cement/sand/gravel to one of my mandals on the course, he kindly offered to buy me a pair of FootJoy CoolJoy sandals in the pro shop.

I just laughed and replied, "You know there's a reason why they're called sandals, right?"

My gosh, some people just aren't that creative, ya know?

just another post that reconfirms the A-hole ness of this board sometimes, I love it when people just get flamed by the "elite" group around here.

Currently I am working on getting some custom made golf shoes converted from some nike shox, as of now its early, but it involves having the shoes re-soled to a point which right now I'm working on a spike pattern and a way to get the spike into the soles. I have a customer who is a injection mold company who is helping me right now so my cost are less as I am friends with them and they enjoy a challenge it seems.

The shoemaker who is doing the install of the soles is also the same guy who is making my custom bowling shoes, made from some walking shoes which are in my size. I am debating on having some casual dress shoes also made up for bowling but they will wait till I see how well the first ones work, the bowling ones will have full velcro on the bottom to accept the dexter slide soles.

for the record I wear a size 17.5/18 pending on the maker of the shoe, I have been lobbying nike to make golf shoes that high, but no luck yet.

If you're feet are that big you should just not play golf. Man, what are you spike marks on the green like?
