Slighter Refinishing of psk114's Newport II

Hello everyone! I'm going to be helping out a little here in the putters forum.

I'm going to post some pics for everyone's enjoyment as often as I can. I'll start with an ongoing project that I have going with Tom Slighter at the moment.

I had an old beat up Scotty Cameron Newport 2 that needed some life pumped into it! Before I explain what's been going down with the putter just let me say that Tom is AWESOME to deal with. I've been a serious pain in the posterior on this putter, and Tom's been great to deal with.

I'm actually having this putter re-finished for a young man who works for me at my golf course. He's a great player and a great kid, and he deserved a gift, so this putter will be it! He prefers a very heavy putter and has about 40 grams of lead tape on his old beat up Ray Cook.

First order of business was to figure out a way to raise the weight of the putter? So I contacted Tom and he and I decided that we could port the heel and toe of the putter and fill the ports with Tungsten Plugs for a tour issued custom look. I found some Tungsten blanks and sent the putter off to Seattle. I've attached pics of the putter with the face re-milled and all the ports, dings and nicks milled out. Putter looks nice as you can see, but we came to a snag. Turns out Tom could not cut the tungsten (too hard) so we had to change plans. Tom made stainless plugs for the ports to replace the lost weight and came up with an ingenious solution. He milled a stainless steel "floor" to fit into the cavity seamlessly to increase the weight. I've asked Tom to finish the putter in black and do some real unique stampings. I'm confident this is going to be one sick putter when Tom's done with it, I hope it makes a great gift!

This is still a work in progress, but it's coming along well so far. I'll post the rest of the pics as soon as the putter is done.

What a nice gesture! I want to work for a guy like you!

Did tom re-stamp the "scotty cameron" on the face?

Yes, Tom restamped the Scotty Cameron on the face. He did a great job on that! I also have asked him to stamp just "CAMERON" in the new cavity in larger "dancing" letters. Should give the putter some charachter.

BTW, the guy the putter is for has earned it 100%! He's a great kid who works harder than any high school/college person should, too bad he can't putt, or he might actually beat me. HA!

How much does something like that cost.  I don't mean to be nebby I would like to know for future reference.  ( It might be cheeper to buy a beat up SC and get it refinished then buy a new one)

Mr. Titleist

Due to the somewhat unique route Tom has taken with my putter, he has yet to give me a firm estimate. He did say that a standard re-mill/re-finish is around 90 bucks. I'd call him first, he's awsome to deal with.

Wow! I looked up today at the SC website and it was 110. The was with a new grip shaft and head cover though. Now all I need to find is an old SC that I like

I am sure SC loves that he restamped the face.  Hard to believe that he would do that.

Why not? It's still a cameron putter. It's not like he stamped his name on a cameron putter.

His name is not SC. No right to do it. Plus, this putter gets sold as a tour putter and someone gets screwed.

Um.... I really dont get your POV here? He only restamped the face to match the retail stamping that was there originally? It's not like he's doing fake circle t's or anything? Anyone who'd spend "tour putter money" on a SC would surely notice that the sole stampings are 100% retail anyhow! Just help me understand why this is a problem to you?

Never said it was a problem. Just surprised that he would do it.

BTW...The putter was originally engraved and not hand stamped. :idhitit:

I think I can better explain the position. The name Scotty Cameron is probably trademarked I am sure...to be stamping a trademark for pay without owning the rights to make a buck off that trademark is not right. There is the prospect of someone trying to pass this off down the line as a handmade if the kid who is getting it has it stolen or sells it in the future. While what Tom is stamping may not be illegal (I would consult an attorney first before altering) you would think there is an ethical thing here that most putter makers or designers will not alter another guys stuff. The Titleist people and Scotty studio are pretty adamant (sp?) about others refinishing their stuff...I know because my old finishing guy did some for a collector one time without going thru Scotty Studio. There was a pretty big stink about it. If you own the putter and tinker with it yourself that is one thing but for someone else to make money altering trademarked material can bring out the lawsuits in a hurry. Doing same stamping that was there when purchased is a misnomer in that it is now a "handmade" because it is hand stamped. The original are all machine engraved which does not hold the same value to a collector. In my opinion, as simple as my opinion is, nothing wrong with reweighting etc. but messing with the trademarked name is a no no and altering the engraving to a handstamp is a no no. Sorry to go on so long.
