Not playing high school golf? Good idea or not

Recommended Posts

I was seeing what you guys think of not playing on the high school golf team. Face it, nine hole matches are a waste of time. I was wandering if it would be a good idea to play ajga and some other large events and focus on schoolwork more. missing days of conference is hurting my grades and we all know coachs are going to be looking at grades almost as much as golf. What do you guys think of playing large ajga tournaments in the summer and fall and not high school?

I am totally up for not playing high school golf.
I only played my freshman year and it was a waste for me since the some members of the team could not back us up at state.
For college coaches, high school golf is a joke unless you are part of a state championship team/from a solid golfing state.
Playing large events such as ajgas, amateurs, fcwts, ijgts, etc. throughout the season will look way better than the local 9 hole match against your cross town rival.
Obviously there are also benefits to playing high school golf. You have to look at both sides of the equation and figure out what's best for you.

Unless you are a top junior, it will be easier for you to stand out in highschool matches. You can have average scores in competition, earn various honors, and maybe take a conference/division solo title or 2. If you play solely junior tournaments and dont impress you are dead.

Not playing high school golf will be a one of the biggest mistakes in your life, especially if you take golf seriously. If you're good it's a great opp to play college golf which is a trip. Also talking about missing class and what not c'mon thats a dream for people in school. You have plenty of time to get caught up with homework or study halls. You also learn to compete in your 9 hole matches. Don't quit.

i think its better to not play it. you can play in some tourneys because of rules in the winter. nine hole matches waste your time. touraments dont get good until sectionals and conference. but still they are one day touraments on 6300 yard courses. wouldnt collage coachs like to see you play 6900. 6300 to 7000 is a big jump. i dont think its worth it.

Well whats your handicap? This question will receive completely different answers based on your scores. None of the top ajga kids play for their high schools, but if your averaging 90 you shouldnt even think about ajga and you should def play high school golf.

Grades are important, but so is learning self-control and how to be a team member, even over 9 holes. I was hoping my HS son would play on the golf team, but that wasn't what he wanted. He chose soccer and track. In the end he's learning much the same from being on both those teams while maintaining close to a B average. Last year he was voted soccer team captain.

In answer to your question, playing on the HS golf team can help you mature. As for grades, they are important too. But, if you can't maintain close to a "B" while enjoying school activities or golf then it's not the best choice.

Play high school golf. Play as many amateur events you can qualify for. Play AJGA's in the summer and maybe a couple after your high school season down south. My summers went baseball, AJGA, high school golf and I still managed to do the honor roll. Don't kid yourself guys, high school is cake compared to college work.

What if my school has gone to state 9 straight times, won it a couple times, won districts and sectionals multiple times. We also have one of the top amateurs in the state, also our old number got a full ride to IU. I'm on JV A and our 9 hole average was 153.7 (i really don't know for sure but it was low 150's). but im in a rut...i feel as if i don't stand a chance on varsity.

since i know its coming...IM NOT TRYING TO BRAGG!!! serious answers please.

I am also a freshmen and I just got done with high school golf season on Tuesday and it was one of the best times of my life, it is so much fun and it doesnt kill your grades that much I have a 4.1 GPA right now and I have lunch 8th period and study hall 9th period so if I miss my last 1 or 2 periods due to golf its ok.

Just curious, are you sure you mean 4.1? How did you take AP classes as a freshman?

Unfortunately Clayton you really do not have the kinda game that would lead me to believe you should be skipping HS golf. A great deal of the AJGAs, if not all of them, during the HS season are invite only and at this point you're not going to get invited to them. If you're grades are suffering than that is one thing, but you're not too good for high school golf. Unless you're going to like Oklahoma State, Stanford, etc. youre state tournament results individually are plenty important to coaches.

cmon man team golf is fun, biggest thing is you will know what it feels like to be part of a team, and the different type of pressure it brings.

Learning to salvage a terrible round when normally you wouldn't care as much because you are already out of contention is pretty darn important when playing for a team. Your team mates 69 doesn't mean sh*t if you go out and fire an 85. Learning to deal with that pressure, and knowing what its like to letdown your team (it eventually happens to everyone.) is pretty important.

It's the closest thing you are going to get in the meantime to playing for a college team, so why would you pass that up?

Man high school academics is a joke live a little.

I think it depends on the seriousness of your hs coach and program.

I'm the head coach of a very successful high school program in Georgia. We do not play 9-hole matches. We travel to the most prestigous tournaments in Georgia, Alabama, and South Carolina. Often, the fields we play in are as good as any SJGT or regional event. Most are 36-holes and are ranked by the junior golf scoreboard.

My guys get great competition, and at the same time have to learn how to balance academics, practice, and travel. We have workouts at 6:30 AM three times per week and very structured goal-setting programs. College coaches respect what I put my guys through.

Whoa, that sounds pretty intense for high school. For our team we practice, play, and eat. Thats about it. And we are actually pretty successful
