Asked for D3, received E6!

So I purchased a Tour titleist 53* wedge (head only) this past week, and I wanted to get it ready for the weekend, my guy that normally does work for me is 35 miles away from where I work, so I decided I head to a local retailer (who will remain un-named because I do not want this to become a BASH fest on them) and have them put a DGS300 w/ a tour velvet with 2 wraps of tape. I asked for the club to be 35.5" and a swingweight of D3. I go to pick up the club during my lunch break, and ask the guy to put it on the swing weight scale...E6!!!! I just about lost my head. I couldn't believe that they could be off by that many swing weights.

A DGS300 should weight 127g

A Golf Pride Tour Velvet should weight 51.5g

I don't know how much two wraps of tape weigh...

How hard can it be to get the swing weight to D3 for this un-named retailer? Needless to say I went off and had them pull the shaft, and I will not have my wedge for the weekend. I will make the trip to my golf club guy from this point forward, I have learned my lesson and will NEVER return to that retailer for ANY reason!

The only thing I can think of is that a tour head is meant to be a little heavy to compensate for grinding, porting, and other modifications tour players often make that amateurs don't.

What was the head weight on it? I'm assuming it's a heavy head. You can't really be mad at the guy for assembling a head (which you brought in) and it coming out differently. If it say came in at C6 and he didn't do anything about it, then you'd have good reason to be angry. If he assembled it and tip weighted it, or slathered it with lead tape, again, you'd have reason to be angry.

There's really not too much he can do about such a heavy head. At this point you've only got three options, play the wedge shorter, counterbalance, or grind some headweight off . . . I don't think you'd be too happy if he did any of those without your consent.

I hear what you are saying, and I will have to go check the head weight. I guess I didn't think it would be too difficult to get the swing weight to D3, and if they know after checking the headweight that it was going to be way off they could have notified me before putting the club together

You're right about that part. A good clubfitter would have run the theoreticals through an excel spreasheet like this and recieved an estimated number and called you if there was going to be problems with it being too heavy.

For future refrence, here's a swing weight calculating program you can use to estimate the swing weight of a club based on length and weights of components next time. :)

You need excel to use the file.
