Those are the 88 models. They had the square grooves in them. The only year and set, that hogan made with square grooves in them. I have a 2-e set with KBS shafts in them. As long as u play the E wedge as your Gap wedge, and arent afraid to get laughed at where they hit a 8 iron and you hit a 7.

Run your finger from top to bottom on the grooves and see if u can still feel the square grooves. They are a Bxxxx to get out with those pins. It took me about 4 hours to get them all out. You have to take a nail set and punch them out after they are heated. I am sure there are other ways to pull the shafts and pins though.
I just purchased a 2-EW set from GS for $67.00. They do not say "forged" or "Ft. Worth Forged" on the hosels. However, they are pinned. Are these '88 or is there another year model? Were there two different type of forgings on this model?
yeah 88 dont say anything on the hosels.. and they are pinned...do you have the redline on the back of the head ?

I drilled mine out.
I think the punch method would be better!

Apex 4 shafts and red lines below Ben Hogan logo on back. Paintfill is missing on the bottom of all but the 9 iron (easy enough fix). Heads are in excellent condition...not mint, but very, very nice. Grooves seem to be in very good condition. Lofts (weak) don't scare me as these are the lofts I have always played (23* 3-iron - 49* PW).

Funny thing is, I test hit these for about 30 minutes on the range. I was cranking the 2-iron out to 225 with a nice boring slight right to left trajectory. Each club just seemed to fly very, very well. I'll game them tomorrow and see.

Not the best pics (thank you Blackberry), but here you go...

the 5 iron is 37.75 inch's which is about a 1/4 inch short to most OEM spec today.

the Hogan No 4 shaft, built by AMF corp, which own Brunswick who made the shaft. they later made the rifle shaft. its a great shaft, I truly wish that I could find a set of No. 5 hogan shafts myself. I played with the No 4, and then later the No. 5 shafts in the middle 1980's to early 1990's.

I have just picked a set 3-e with apex 4 shafts. ยฃ67, really pleased with the condition for a set made in 1988.
First outing this evening, very impressed. No problems with the long irons and hit a few mid to short irons stiff.
Didn't have my GPS but pacing seemed to show they were 2 clubs shorter than my Apex FTX. Will check the lofts and lies on the bench later, yard ages as follows;

E-100 yards
9-110
8-120
7-130
6-140
5-150
4-160
3-170

Just checked my Reds on my loft lie machine.

Tweaked all the lofts one club down as per the chart above so now the e is 45*, should give me a little more distance. Also dropped the lie to match. Irons sit nicely now, previous owner had them quite upright, each iron had to be dropped about 3/4*.

Looking forward to playing them again tomorrow.

So you bent them up to 4* strong? Yikes. So much for any bounce those soles may have had.

One of my all time favorites, played them with Apex persimmons through much of the 90's. I like these better than the Ft. Worths, but not as much as the '99s.

Enjoy!

The best way to remove the pins is to drill the pin by going down through the shaft with a jobbers, long drill bit. Then it is any easy matter punch out the remaining bit of pin from the iron hosel using a punch and hammer.

Yeah, seems like a bad idea given that the 9 is already 45*. Probably will dig right in now.

for sure, i game the 99 apex blade now they kicked my 712mb titleist out of my bag. I have played titleist irons for about 12 years starting with the 990's, i couldn't believe the flight and feel with the 99 apex immidiately after i hit a few shots i was in ah and couldn't come to grips that after 5 mins these were actually better then the 712mb (these are good, don't get me wrong)

I am waiting for my set of Hogan Redlines to return from the restorer's shop. I had them completely redone but will be getting them back sans shafts. I'll be getting the shafts but they won't be installed. I'm tall (6'4") and play +3/4" shafts in my contemporary irons, so the stock Apex shafts in these irons would be very short for me. I hope that someone has a suggestion for a Modern shaft that has similar characteristics to the Apex, which I always loved the feel of. I believe the the "secret sauce" was their softish tip. I'm eager to hear any suggestions that anybody might have for me. I'll post the pics when the heads arrive. The shop I use in SoCal, Quality Golf, does really fantastic work. I'm expecting them to come back looking like new. They were in pretty good condition when I sent them with a minimum of bag chatter, etc.. When those get back, I'll be sending a set of Staff FG-17s to them. So much for my affordable hobby. It's still cheaper than any of the other hobbies I've enjoyed in my life.

I just recently got my Redlines back from the shop and put DG300s in them. Trouble is that they're too nice to play now. I'll put them up for sale soon, I guess, after I enjoy looking at them for a while longer. Please let me know if anyone has interest in them. I still have the original stiff Apex shafts.

HOLY MOLY, those are beautiful!!! May I ask which shop did you send them to for the refinishing? I have been thinking for a long time about refinishing one of my Hogan sets in copper some day.

ย

I've been using Quality Golf in Santa Ana, CA. Their prices are very competitive and their grinding is first class. It seems that they can do anything that's possible and they understand the importance of keeping vintage things accurate to original spec's. The owner's name is Dean Ota and he's a good guy/good communicator.
