inbetween S and X flex with hard transition at the top

better to soft step X or hard step S ?
im kinda inbetween S and X flex. i have a hard move at the top which most would say to go with X flex but i dont think im 100% X, would it be best to hard step S, or softstep X ? i guess im going with DGs300, or X100 as i prefer the heavier weight

thanks in advance

I would always recommend going with the S, because you can always choke up on the grip to make it stiffer, and swing just a little harder, or go up one club and do similar and choke up, and swing with control. Rickie does it all the time:

You can make the S feel like a X in your swing by choking up, but you CANNOT make the X feel like an S. Know what I mean? And when the weather changes from hot to cold, you might want it to be a bit more on the S side than X.
Plus you've got the added benefit of control from the shorter club as you choke up.

lol, aint know way that could happen, i also forgot to mention i play 1/2 to 1 inch longer depending on manufacture so that may retract the about posts, not sure but if it does can you guys repost your thoughts if they seem to change dependent upon longer than standard shafts ?

thaks

In your situation, since you're .5" - 1" over in length, it makes sense to go with X-100.

However, I think you should put together some tester clubs (get some identical 6 irons for instance) and buy an S300 and X100 for each club, cut to your length - and hit away. Believe it or not, you can probably do this for about $50 - $60, and cheaper if you know how to take out and install your own shafts. I learned how to do this, and it's been a lot of fun.

I started doing this 10 years ago, and I have been able to test different shafts side by side to truely compare their flex, feel, trajectory, dispersion, etc,.... IMO there is no better way to decide which shaft best suits you until you hit with them for a "while" and see how each shaft performs with your swing.

10 years ago I bought two Hogan Apex 6 irons out of a "Demo club" bin at my local golf repair shop for like $10 each. The shop was a Hogan dealer, and the owner sells all his previous year's demo clubs for cheap. The two irons I got were almost brand new, but didn't have the shafts I was looking to test.

I then put an S-300 in one, and an X-100 in the other. After about a week of pounding balls at the range, I settled on the X-100. Then I did the same with a 6.5 Rifle vs. 7.0 - settled on the 7.0, then did a showdown with the X-100 vs. 7.0 Rifle. The X-100 won out, and I've been using it for the past 10 years.

About 6 months ago, I bought a couple (identical) Nike Forged Blade 6 irons (used demo's), and shafted them with an X-100 and 6.5 Project X. Unlike what I've read, to me the 6.5 has more whip in it than the X-100, and I was looking for something with similar flexas the X100, yet lighter feel with tighter dispersion (hence the interest in the PX's). Since the 6.5 was a little whippy for me, I then tried a 7.0 PX - and that shaft is pretty darn stiff.

I'm still getting used to it, and I'm finding the 7.0 to be more accurate with tighter dispersion, yet less forgiving on mishits of course. I'm leaning towards soft stepping 7.0's, or hard stepping 6.5's. Not sure yet.

I've learned one thing for sure throughout my experimentations, and that is that every player is going to hit any particular shaft differently than anybody else. Everybody loads the shaft differently, has a different launch angle, etc,... so it doesn't always come down to swing speed and how far you hit your 6 iron that will determine what shaft/flex is best for someone.

Try the Apples vs. Oranges test, and see what you think. You can get used demo clubs and S300, S400, and X100 pull outs everywhere. It's actually a very cheap way of testing shafts.

FYI - I've never hit an S400 before, but I imagine it's right in between an S300 and X100. Also, I found the S300 vs. X100 noticably different. I have 4 sets of the same irons: one is a (D3) S-300 setup, another is a (D3) X100 setup, another is a (D4) X100 setup, and my set for next year will most likely be a (D4) with 7.0 PX's, soft-stepped.

Good luck!
