How often do you replace your putter grip

golfstud

Recommended Posts

I've had my putter for a couple of years now. I've been using tubes for my golf bag (finally bought a new bag with 14 dividers) and its definitely worn. I'm going to replace it but I'm having trouble finding the original odyssey black series putter grip.

Anyway, Im deciding between the new odyssey black series grip and maybe the golf pride velvet grip, but just curious how often everyone (NOT using plastic tubes) changes their putter grip.

Thanks

Don't think I have ever stuck with a putter long enough to switch grips... I am switching grips on my 006 right now because I didn't like the feel of the Kangaroo Stitchback... There is an iomic on an anser 2 that has been on for a year and a good wipe down with warm water would freshen it right up. Golfpride grips aren't the best for me, I have oily hands and it affects the feel in my opinion...

I change mine at least once a season and usually twice. It's surprising how much wear your putter grip gets. You can't even tell unless you compare it to a new one.

My friend has an Odyssey putter with a black and red grip. I've been looking for one of those to try on my Ping, it feels great.

I've had my putter for about 6 years now and this winter is going to be the first time I've changed the grip. Right now I'm trying to decide between the Golf Pride V-Rad vs the Winn Excel Medallist. I perfer a putter grip with a softer feel. I had not changed the grip before now was I was a little concerned that the new grip will throw my putter mojo off. In the end I decided that I like my putter too much to replace it with another.

I have changed every club in my bag atleast once since I got my putter and it will see other clubs go before it will be retired.

What putter are you putting it on?

All of them. I need to source a few more things and the 11 or so that I'm going to keep will be decked out.

It's a fun winter project. I'll have some interesting photos by spring. ;)

Keep in mind that I play about 200 times a year, and practice putting at home quite a bit. If the putter has a leather grip in it, then it might be years before I change it. I have one putter; that I have had since 1985, that has a leather grip on it. It is the same grip that was on the putter when I bought it. I have a few others with leather grips, and they have been on a while.

When I did use Ping grips, or Lamkin Cords, then I changed them about every 6 weeks at the minimum. I just thought the rubber ones got to slick to fast, and that soap didn't do a darn thing for them. Just made them sticky soapy.

I change the grips on my irons at least 3 times a year, and will change the one on my driver's about every month.

Its all personal perference.

CCC is a course I could definitely play that many times per year and always enjoy it. Love those postage stamp sized greens.

I changed mine often because I could not find something that I liked, but I found midsize Iomic grips and they are my favorite. I played the large and the standard size and overlooked the midsize. It was a foolish move, but now I don't see myself changing grips until the Iomic gets beat up.

Wish I had a dime for every time I have read this. Love the feel of these grips, bought three recently to pick out what I liked and the color I liked (red or black). Giving the others to friends. Anyway, my putter, a Rife Antigua was sent off to Kevin Colbert of www.Putterplating.com for some custom work. The new Iomic grip and a UST ff shaft was sent as well. Should be getting back to me in a few days. Can't wait. Heard nothing but good things about these Iomic grips. Read lots of old posts. Seems the standard Iomic is smaller than the normal standard. Their midsize (what I am going with) is about the size of a standard grip. Their oversize is about the size of a "normal" midsize grip. Just something to be aware of, they run small. I also read that the Iomic standard and midsize are the desirable "firm" material, but for weight savings, the jumbo/oversize Iomic is a softer and lighter material that many did not prefer. Read where this might reduce feel, a bad thing to most. Anyway, I ordered all mine from www.regripit.com and got great service and fast shipping. Also, they seemed to have all sizes and styles of Iomics in stock. Which they should, since this (Iomic grips) is all they sell. If I was changing grips, I would definately consider giving the Iomic a try. The material is extremely smooth, yet firm. I love it and can't wait to feel it on an actual ball with my Rife Antigua.

So I've got a Cameron Center Shaft Proto that I put a Red Baby T on when I bought it as a Senior in High School. That same grip is still on it. It is now almost black. Thats what happens when you game one putter almost exclusively since '03 and leave the original grip on it. BTW... the grip feels like crap and the superstitious part of me is scared to change it.

Usually change the grip within a few days of getting the putter to a pingman... I've never kept one long enough to have to replace that one change though. I know I played almost a season with the iomic I got on my SSB putter and it still looks brand new. That iomic is very close to a pingman so I didn't feel the need to change it out.

I like the idea of going to leather on the putter though... Can you pull those fairly easily? I would like to keep the expensive grip when I change clubs.

I change the grips on my irons (half cord) once or twice each year (I play about 100 rounds each year and hit lots of balls). I change the grips on my woods (also half cord) once per year. I rarely change my putter grip, however. My current putter is on its second grip and I've had the putter for 15 seasons. I scrub it with soap and water a few times per season, but I don't want to change it unless I'm looking for a different feel. Storing your clubs in a cool, dry environment is important to the life of your equipment. There's not much wear and tear on the putter grip if cared for properly.

 • 1 month later...

I've just updated the grip on my putter, the guy at the local golf store recommended the Golf Pride Tradition grip. I had him install a blue one on my putter and it feel fantastic. I find it to be a nice soft grip with out feeling mushy and the feel/feedback on the putts seem to be spot on. Glad I chose that one in the end.

Once you find the right grip with your putter its bad luck to change it. Like someone above posted, "i only change grips when i change putters." couldn't agree more.

Oh yeah, meant to add that I use~
