wedge shafts

I need help deciding on a wedge shaft - input appreciated!
hi,

Tried the search function but couldn't find what I needed, so here goes.

I've recently sold my '08 titleist oil cans with 5.5 project x shaft, and decided to try the latest generation of spin milled wedges in the black nickel finish - love the look and have heard good things. I'm currently playing mizuno mp-57 irons with PX 5.5 - which i'm really happy with.

In my wedges I definitely liked the project x over the wedge flex shafts - especially the fact that it is less lively and whippy than the wedge flex, makes me feel more in control of the wedge. I did however, miss some feel around the green.

I'm buying my new wedges of a web shop in the uk, as it will save me loads of money - the only problem is that I don't have the benefit of testing shafts prior to purchase.

I'm wondering if standard rifle shafts might be the answer??
- what i'm looking for is the "in control feel - a "dead" feel to some - of the project x's but with a little softer tip.

What are your experiences and preferences, and what would you recommend?
Also, if any of you have tried or are currently playing the titleist spin milled black nickel i'd like to hear your thoughts on in?

thanks!
/Anders

For what it's worth, I play Rifle 6.5s in my three iWedges. I used to play softer shafts in the wedges than the rest of my iron set but after a long conversation with a PING customer service guy on the phone, he told me the idea was to keep the ball down with a stronger flex on full shots to better control the trajectory. I can't tell you if this theory holds water but I went ahead and matched my wedge shafts to the rest of my iron set, all Rifle 6.5 (not flighted, not PX).

I think they play fine, even around the greens. No regrets.

Just curious any particular reason why youre not considering the Mizuno Forged MP-T Wedges?
I play S300's in all 3 wedges, and regular in the irons. The clubmaker said that a stiffer shaft in the wedges will assist control and be more consistant on full shots (the shaft won't flex too much when taking divots).
Call a clubmaker, or speak to your pro, they should advise you.
Weird - most people go softer in their wedge shafts relative to their irons. Basically to enhance the feel of the more delicate or half shots - nothing to do with divots. Meh.

I'm an advocate of slightly softer wedge shafts when compared to my iron set: in my case Dynamic Gold S400s versus X100s in the rest of the irons. I've also heard of people advocating the use of the same shafts for consistency's sake. Both of these theories have a strong following at all levels of play. Personally, I've never heard an argument that advocates stiffer shafts in the wedges. I have seen a lot of people playing stiff shafts in wedges and regular shafts in the irons, but that set-up has as much to do with the players concerned having stock R-flex shafts in their iron sets and the stock shafts in many off-the-shelf wedges (e.g. Vokeys) being Dynamic Gold S-flex shafts rather than any deliberate decision to play the clubs that way. If a person doesn't want to start changing shafts (as many casual golfers don't) then you end up with that set-up straight out of the box.

In your case, the obvious answer would be to go with matching Project X shafts in your new wedges as a custom order. You've played and liked them before by the sounds of it, and there's every reason to stick with what works. I'm not a fan of the PX shafts myself, so my opinion is pretty much moot, but the couple of people I know who play them both have the same shafts in their sand and lob wedges. From what I'm told, the Project X plays marginally stiffer than a Rifle shaft and a rough match, stiffness-wise, for a 5.5 Project X in the Rifle line would be something around the 6.0 mark. Thus, a 5.5 flex Rifle shaft would be expected to play marginally softer than the shafts in your irons.

Many top level players play an 8 iron flex in their wedges for as you say, more feel.

I switched from clevelands to titleist two year back and haven't looked back. I've only tried mizuno wedges at demos and their wedges didn't make me think of changing to mizuno. further, from what I've heard and read the '09 titleist spin milled wedge is supposed to be an improvement of the '08; also, I like the look.

Thanks for the input, guys.

Is there anyone here that plays, or has played the std. rifle shaft in their wedges? would love to hear from you. I'm having a tough time deciding if the std. rifle shat would give me an edge compared to the project x.
As earlier mentioned, I liked the project x in my previous set of wedges but I would like a bit more feel around the greens.
