Blades

Recommended Posts

How many of us oldies are playing blades and if so which ones?

I'm not presently playing a set of blades but I do have two sets of them. Hogan Apex II's, and Cleveland TA-1's....make that (3) sets...I forgot about the Mizuno MP 32's. I sold my MP-14's, and the MP-33's.

And I'd bet that every senior here has played blades before.biggrin.gif

Not exactly blades like we played growing up, but I find my MP-68s to be better companion to my aging swing. Last Sat I had 191 to the front of number 16, pin appeared to be about 4-5 paces from the front. Hit a beautiful 5 iron with about a 5 yard draw, pin high and about 8' left. Made the birdie.

The rest of the round was pretty normal, but that 5 iron made my day. :)

Primary bag:
Titleist 913 D3 8.5
Titleist 915Fd 13.5
Titleist 913h 17
Mizuno MP-18 4-PW
Scratch wedges 50, 55, and 60
Bettinardi mid-shank putter

Backup bag:
Ping G400 9
Ping G30 fw 13
Ping G30 hybrid 19
Ping iBlade 4-PW power spec
Macgregor VIP wedges 51, 56, and 60

I started golf as a caddy in 1955, and my first irons were acquired one at a time. All were small headed blades back then.
The Club Pro was an elderly Scotsman who taught, hard work, love of the game, and playing by the rules. Forgiveness was something you got in Church.
I play Mizuno MX25 cavity backs and MP33 blades today. Fine irons. Experimenting with Hybrids in the long irons now, so we'll see as we carry on.

I am in and out of clubs these days - occupational hazard around this website, I'm afraid. I alway have a set of blades around though. These are the clubs I love. This is what I carry in the MacKenzie with the persimmons when I am just walkin' the course. I just bought a set of MP-67's to be my toys for the year. Can't wait to get them in.

I'm reshafting a old set of 1978 Wilson Staff Tour blades with 5.5 PX shafts that will be my gamers this year. I also have a set MacGregor 1025 V-foil blades. I'm 61 with a 11 hc (ouch--that will change shortly).

I learned to golf back the early and mid 60's so any club post that time is easy to hit I think. However I did have a 38 yr hiatus before coming back to the game.

Oh, you gotta birthday coming up? HA!

My Girlfriends dad plays Those wilson Staffs from that same time frame. He is one of the guys who when he was my age, would have been a member here. Played all the time etc. In recent years he just stopped playing as much. I put a Hybrid in his hands and he looked at me like i kicked his dog. Then he tried to hit it, and i looked at him like he kicked mine. Pretty interesting that he plays much better using his 30 year old blades.

My everyday irons are the 1998-2002 Hogan Apex, which are actually pretty darn easy to hit.

But when I want to challenge myself a bit more, I grab this bag...

After a 25 year break from the game I started plaing again almost 7 years ago. I struggled in the beginning playing GI clubs, they just didn't look right to me. One day at a local range the pro brought down a couple of his Wilson P I 5's for me to try out. They looked like an old friend in my hands with the compact head and thin topline. On a whim I bought a set of Wilson FG 51's on ebay for $45 again love at first sight. They are still in the bag 4 years later, and believe me I've demoed evry new iron on the market. My older brother recently took the game up again and he's playing the PI 5's, just couldn't seeing him playing shovels. To paraphrase a gun lover, I'll give up my blades when you pry them from my cold dead fingers. PS I'm 56

I'm currently playing with the 2008 MacGregor MT Mids iron set and Mactec woods I bought last year, after a 25 year hiatus, but I've got 2 nice sets of late 60s vintage MacGregor MT Tourney irons and one set of MT Tourney woods I'm going to drag out this summer. Those persimmon woods sure look tiny though, compared to the Mickey-Mouse-size driver I now use. biggrin.gif

Back in the Dark Ages (60s) I played Burke Punchirons. When I got back into golf in the late 70s I acquired a set of Wilson Staffs and played them reasonably well for two decades. I bought a set of Titleist 690.MBs several years ago and this year bought a new set of Callaway Tour Authentic X Prototypes and love them!! The Titleists will go in my South Carolina bag next month.

I tried different cavity backs, but really prefer the looks of a blade at setup. Blades also force me to make better swings by concentrating on being smooth. Can't beat the feel of a well struck blade, like a hot knife through butter....
