Waterproof Shoes

Recommended Posts

Why?
I'm a newbie, both to golf and to this forum, so I could use a little guidance, please. Basically, I'd like to know just how vital waterproof golf shoes really are.

Shoes are important to me and hot, sweaty feet an anathema. I've spent years suffering with "waterproof, breathable" hiking boots that were certainly waterproof, but about as breathable as plastic. (The major membrane maker can't keep up with my feet.) For boots, I've gone back to the few models that have no waterproof membranes and am much happier.

Is there enough of a difference in use between hiking boots and golf shoes that I'd want to reconsider my strenuous bias? I live and will play in San Antonio, Texas, but have hiked (and hated GoreTex) in mountainous states both West and East, so it isn't just a Texas problem.

Oh - first post. Thanks.

First: :welcomeani:

As far as shoes go, if you play early morning on dew covered fairways, your feet will get wet.

Of course, if you play in the rain your feet will get wet too! Wet feet suck.

Now, if all of your rounds are afternoon outings in the desert, you probably won't need any waterproofing.

For me, (and many like me) It's a must have option.

I'm with everyone else on this one. I have a pair of non waterproof shoes that I wear for afternoon rounds or if I know it will be clear but my other two pair are waterproof and get the most use. Early morning dew will get you wet quicker than you think and I don't know about you but I HATE trying to move around in wet feet.

It all depends on when and where you play. Growing up in the Dallas area, I always wondered why golf shoes were waterproof for a few simple reasons:
1. It rarely rained during the summers in Dallas. Even when it did rain, it usually rained at night and my local course dried quickly. When it did rain during the day, I just didn't play (in part b/c of lightning).
2. My home course was dry almost all the time. Unless I hit my ball into/near a creek, I didn't have to worry about stepping in "wet areas."
3. Because of the heat, dew on the ground burned off very quickly and wasn't a problem.
4. Dallas has a long golf season and there is no reason to play in wet weather.

Until I moved to Connecticut, I never "needed" waterproof shoes. Now that I am in Connecticut, I insist on waterproof shoes for the following reasons:
1. If I play early in the morning and walk, the dew on the ground will not burn off until my shoes get soaked. If they weren't waterproof, I would have a serious problem.
2. Many of the courses in Connecticut are connected to and through wetland areas. Even on days it doesn't actually rain, there can be very wet areas/casual water in low areas on the courses.
3. Unlike Dallas, we have a "season" that isn't that long. April to October. Combined with the fact I only get to play on weekends b/c of my job, absent lightning or really heavy rain, I am going to play in wet weather and have good raingear ensure I don't have to quit.

BTW - the top of the line golf shoes from most shoe companies are only available in waterproof models.

I live in Houston and would not play in shoes that were not waterproof. However, in my golf league is a guy who wears the golf sandals. He says he does not care if his feet get wet or not. He does not like wearing hot, sweaty shoes. So, if you don't mind getting your feet wet, you might think about the golf sandals. They are just not for me. :)

I thought about sandals. As a newbie, however, I expect to spend an inordinate amount of time in the rough, and the San Antonio rough likely includes sharp things - cactus, rattlesnakes, and scorpions. The sharp-poisonous-to-benign ratio is a bit high for me to risk bare toes. I like the concept, though I wonder at my reception from people who think ties and tucked shirt-tails are a bare minimum for civilized golfing attire.
