The composite craze has continued in 2005 and Callaway is once again leading the charge. They have just released the brand new Fusion Fairway Wood to expand on the already strong Big Bertha and Big Bertha Titanium lineup.

The physics behind the Fusion Fairway is simple. The body and face are made of stainless steel while the crown and back are replaced by a wrap around carbon composite piece. The lightweight of the carbon means that the majority of the clubhead weight is now in the sole, thus a low centre of gravity. This technology results in a higher ball-flight with less spin for more distance. The clubhead also has an increased Moment of Inertia which keeps it more stable on miss hits. The Fusion Fairway comes stock with a Callaway Golf Fusion NVS shaft from Aldila and many upgrades are available.

The Fusion Fairway promises power in your shots and it delivers. This is definitely one of the longest fairway woods available. The problem is, most testers had no idea where the ball was going. Feel with this club is really dead, even compared with other composite fairway woods, and control is an issue. It is tough to get shots started on line with any sort of consistency, even from fairway lies. While the control issue can probably be minimized with an upgraded shaft this is still a club mainly for recreational players. The deep face makes it a good club out of the rough or off the tee and the Callaway shaft is good for slower swing speeds. For a stronger player, or someone wanting more control and feel out of a fairway wood, stick with the Callaway Big Bertha.
