Least favorite / most ridiculous ball of all time?

I can't remember the name, only that it had "110" stamped on the side. Felt like the same ball that Fred Flintstone used.

Come to think of it - anything from Top-Flite really. The Aero - remember the ball with teardrop shaped dimples? Z-balata? Pretty naff really. And what incarnation is the XL currently on? 7000 or something I think. Can't wait for the XL 10,000.

Maxfli Revolution ... that thing practically came out of the box yellow. The pigment in the cover never held ... faded like crazy.

IIRC the first Ben Hogan ball was a real dud and I think had major quality control issues.

The Top Flite Magna still makes me laugh, though. I distinctly remember one person I played with trying to explain to me how the extra size reduced side-spin without reducing backspin to hold the green.

Funny, I never knew a ball able to suspend the laws of physics...

Anyone else remember the Royal balls from the 1970's with the diamond shaped dimples. It felt like hitting a wet cat.

In less obscure balls, I'd say the Dunlop DDH Steelcore 110. I'd say it was like hitting a rock, except that rocks were softer.

I never understood why people complained about how a ball reacted off a putter. I finally learned how important that can be after trying these balls. I think it's a great long and durable ball, but when I try to putt with it, I can't get the right feel.

Muirfield Tour Balata from the mid 1980s. It flew like a mallard duck that had just been hammered by a load of #4 shot.

Do we even want to know how you happen to know the feeling of hitting a wet cat ?

The Nitro's were awesome scramble tee balls, absolutely horrible at anything else.

Volvick Crystal, hands down.

There was a ball with supposedly 1,000 dimples and I think it was like bending sheet metal on a car. It was soo hard it felt like hitting a glass golf ball.

No one has mentioned the ORANGE Wilson Staff from the days of I believe Jerry Pate. Oh and yes very late 70's possibly early 80's and yes they also had a yellow/green version.... but since retro is in with Srixon....... Wait a whole generation has yet to buy and play a yellow ball.....lol.... Srixon bring out the orange one for Ricky Fowler then his ball will match his clothing..... how cool would that be?

I loved the Ping golf balls, I am looking for a couple to practice putting to see if I'm rolling the ball well. I looked on the bay and sellers were asking way too much for them.

As for the worst balls, I thought that the very first version of the prov1s were a little hard for my taste because I loved the Titleist Professionals, plus they had that seam issue where if you lined the seam parallel to the target line it would have a different flight than if you had the seam perpendicular to the target line

Sponge Bob Square pants!!!! Someone gave my daughter some as a present, I hate that show and won't let my daughter use them.

The old Tour Edition balls that Greg Norman played spun so much that he couldnt keep them on the greens, in fact I am a pretty low spin player and I had a hard time keeping them from spinning off the greens!

I found an old Prostaff orange ball once that when you hit it it left orange paint on your club.


The first version of the ProV1 just fell out of the air for me, 20 yards shorter, maybe I was playing the wrong equipment for it, smaller lower lofted driver, but I couldn't figure out what all the hub bub was about. The new versions I love however.

The old MacGregor balatas would change directions during mid flight numerous times.

HA, I can still picture a Wilson advertisement for its orange ball from back in this era. It featured, if I recall, four Wilson touring pros around a ball washer with a heading of something like, "Who's going to clean up on Tour?" The pros were pointing at themselves. I'm sure the advertisement featured Hale Irwin, Tom Kite and Jerry Pate. I think the fourth golfer was Andy Bean.

Any McGregor ball was a total POS. Would rather play a PoDo from Walgreens. (Got to admit that the TM Intergel was pretty horrible for a modern ball.)

Callaway warbird. I'm sure that thing was actually made from granite. Got given a sleeve at a corporate day a couple of years ago. Didnt even take them out of the packet, just threw the whole lot into the nearest lake.

totally agree with the Spongebob comment. Who in the right mind would play those balls?

There was once Noodle with a clear cover - aka the "Superball." Just like a superball, it went everywhere like a bat out hell. Absolutely no control.

Molitor is a close 2nd to the Volvik. The Volvik is almost as hard as Zolex...And we all know how hard that stuff is.....Wait for it...wait for it...ok, go.

The molitor gets my vote. I'm convinced that whoever made it set out to make a ball that was firmer than the clubface.

I've hit a Volvik and thought meh. But, I've never had the advanced technology of Zolex in my hands.
