Bend my putter...or my hands?

Child Please

Recommended Posts

Hopefully you all can give me a little advice here:

When I ground my putter at address the toe of the blade is up above the ground....Not sure how much is too much, but regardless, I feel like it needs to be as flush to the ground as possible.

That said, is the proper remedy to change my hand position to 'flatten' the putter-head?

I've also considered having my putter bent a couple degrees flat to also fix....

Any advice? My current flatstick is an Odyssey Black Tour #9

Thanks in advance for the opinions, let me know if you need more detail...

Very well said 502 about the putter fitting you and not the other way around.

Those shops should do a good job of bending it. As long as you stay away from some dude's garage, you're usually fine.

Maybe your hands are too low to start with. Before you do anything, try a few putts with your hands a little higher and see what happens. If results are not good, or you are uncomfortable, then go get it bent at a club repair shop. In the old days, I use to put my putter in a vice, set a board on top of it, find a heavy hammer, and give it a good bang. Trees were also good objects to change the loft on a putter. Putters are too expensive to do that today!

i would suggest bending it. you need to have the putter fit properly to you. i personally play mine 3* flat and after i had that done it changed my game as i hold my hands very low down. you need to have your hands in a comfortable position do not make yourself uncomfortable so the putter sits flat on the ground. if the toe is up get it flattened but have it checked. all golf galaxy stores have a putter bending machine on site and it can be bent in a matter of minutes just make sure that you get a certified person to do it. depending on the model it can be adjusted many different times so if it does not work after bending it you can always have it reset to original specs. based on saying that the toe is off the ground i am guessing that you normally pull most of your putts. i have fit hundreds of golfers for their putters over the years and i highly recommend getting this done as it will only help

Before you bend the putter consider the length. Rule of thumb is cut first bend last.

Your putter may be too long and is therefore outside your eye line and this will promote the toe flying as you describe.

Check your eye position relative to the target line and adjust the length prior to bending.

bending your hands sounds very painful. some putters will have a toe sitting up and still be flat on the bottom if they have a cambered sole. Some of the camerons are made to have a toe up. If the heel is hitting first, then bend if you can. If it is just too long, you can always grip lower before you make the decision to cut. some putter's can't be bent very well, like the ping anser..which is why they make all the different lies but of couse, the stores only carry the black.
