Actually, it's the first 126 clubs in America. In the true spirit of the game, we thought it was only fair to take the first 100 and ties. Simply because breaking the ties would have created the opportunity for vast argument.

The United States Golf Association, which compiled this list, has been receiving letters from clubs of all sizes from across the country, asking that their founding dates be recognized.

This list is 1) misleading and 2) incorrect in at least one case.

The list is misleading from the standpoint of determining the oldest U.S. golf clubs because it is based on a club's founding date versus the date when golf started at the club. Many of the clubs did not have golf until several years after their founding.

One case of incorrect information is that The Edgewood Club of Tivoli was founded in 1884, not 1880. This club had golf in its founding year and has had golf continuously since then. Therefore, The Edgewood Club of Tivoli is the oldest U.S. club with continuous golf at the same location.

The following is a list of early U.S. clubs that I've prepared from research. It includes both the club founding date and the date when golf started at the club.

EARLY U.S. GOLF CLUBS

The following list of golf clubs is derived from several sources, including the GolfWRX and Golf Club Atlas websites, and individual club websites. Any such list, including this one, is subject to debate. Questions exist about actual founding dates and whether or not golf play was in existence at the founding. Some clubs also moved to new locations, which raises the question of continuous golf at the same location as a factor.
looking at the list quickly, seems a bit ironic that many of these clubs are not in warm-weather climates year-round.

Follow the money, and the big money tended to be in cold places. Golf was mostly for the very rich back then.

No intent to "call out" anybody, let alone GolfWRX. Besides, as stated in the original post from GolfWRX, the list came from the USGA,

My native state of West Virginia has always laid claim to the first golf course in the US, Oakhurst Links, near the Greenbrier, in 1884.

The criteria for determining "oldest" are varied and debatable. If the criteria include "continuous golf," Oakhurst does not qualify -- golf was discontinued there in 1910 and restored in 1994. If the criteria include "same location," The two South Carolina clubs do not qualify -- both moved to new locations (1898 and 1901) and one of them has a new name (South Carolina Golf Club now the Country Club of Charleston).

The title states oldest in America. Canada is in the Americas and has a few oldies as well. The Royal Montréal in 1883 for instance. Mileading, liste of oldest course in the USA it should have stated.

Good point. Although America is usually meant to mean USA, it's best to use U.S. or Canada (or North Amaerica if you wish to include both the U.S. and Canada). BTW, the Niagara Golf Club in Canada, founded with golf in 1875, claims to be the oldest golf club in North America.
