Good irons for a woman beginning to play golf

Recommended Posts

What are some good clubs to get for a woman beginning to play golf? Not trying to empty my wallet, so used clubs are obviously ok. I'm looking for something that is forgiving enough for a beginner, but has room for improvement. She is pretty athletic, so I am assuming she will take to it pretty quickly.

Callaway Epic Flash SZ 9* - Diamana W 70X
Adams XTD TI 15* - Fuji 8X07

Nike VRII Pro SC 3 Iron - C-Taper X
Mizuno MP54 4 Iron - C Taper X
Mizuno MP64 5-P - C Taper X

Vokey SM7 50F, 56(55)F - C Taper X
Vokey SM7 60 K - Tour V 130

I have a set of Taylormade Burner 2009 4-AW with the original stock 85 gram regular steel shafts, which I am told are softer than the newer uniflex shafts. They can be had new in the sub $400 range at authorized TM online dealers, and less if you go the used route, or even at Golfsmith if you wait for the deals and coupons. I really love them, though they are longer and I choke down a bit, I could probably have them cut down, but am finding it difficult to pry them out of my hands long enough to do so. I originally started out with an older set of oversize clubs because I was told it doesn't matter when you're starting out, but I disagree, I almost got the point of wanting to quit. Go have her just try to hit a bunch of different ones to see what she likes best, from ladies clubs to mens, graphite and steel, you never know what will be the one. Being my size and height I was told to play women's or senior flex but have been athletic my whole life, and turns out these steel shafts were the right fit, I wouldn't have known without hitting everything in sight. These have been easy to hit, feel nice and sweet, and has given me confidence and along with that has helped me get enjoyment out of the game instead of just frustrations.

Mizuno JPX 825 10.5°
Mizuno F60 4W , 7W
Bridgestone J40 4H
Bridgestone J40 DPC 5-PW
Vokey 50° , 54° , 58°
Odyssey ProType #5 - for now

How much money are u willing to spend?
If you are not sure if your wife is gonna immerse herself with the golf thing and just wanna get her a kinda of beginner's set, check out this Lady Cougar starter set, which I got for my wife. It'll do the job for the beginning stage and you won't blow a big hole in your wallet... If she ends up loving it (golf) and starts to get better, then by all means, go for the better iron sets... (p.s. - don't know if you can find this set with steel shaft).

I would second going with gigagolf or other component clubs. My wife and I both decided to get into golf and didn't want to spend too much on clubs when we didn't know how interested in the game we would be. We both decided to go with clubs from gigagolf and two full sets was right around 700 with bags included. Depending on what you are looking for, this allows you to get custom fit clubs at off the shelf price.

For us it really worked out, I'm a lefty so it can be difficult to find cheap-o clubs at the store. I got a mens regular in standard length with +1 degrees of lie. My wifes are also mens standard length (she's tall), with ladies shafts and +1 degree of lie. It would have been pretty difficult to find an off the shelf set of clubs for her that fit so well.

I'm sure we will both upgrade at some point, but the money saved was spent on lessons and was probably the smartest thing we could have ever done. We both decided to sign up for a second series of lessons and are better than our friends who have been playing for 5+ years. I demo'd some ping and callaway irons and I couldn't notice any significant differences in how they perform over my clubs. The shafts in gigagolf's clubs are top notch. As long as you aren't embarrassed by not having a big name brand you will both end up very happy.

When my girfriend was taking up the game I got her a few different ex demo graphite clubs to try out.

They where just ok apart from this one made by Benross (Its a small british brand that make their own heads i think, but usually have good quality components in the shaft and grip)

Long story short it was unbelievable! The best balanced club i have ever it. I was so tempted to stick it in my own bed, even with the pink trim.

The line was called Benross VeloCT and it came a with Grafalloy Prolaunch platinum shaft.

I was gonna buy the set for her but she happened to a win a custom fit set of Ping faith irons in a competition (I know some have all the luck!!!).

Anyway for anybody starting and if you can find them on the bay or somewhere i would highly highly recommend them.

I bought my daughter a set of Pings that were 2 generations old. This was her first adult set and I felt she had a swing speed to swing a senior flex in graphite. I got a good deal and it worked out great. So, you might look at a set of G10s or the ladies set is called a Rhapsody, I just saw a set of irons on eBay for ~$250.

Is anyone using the AMP clubs? My girlfriend is learning, and likes them in ladies flex. She's showing promise, and I'd rather get her a nice set to start off with, especially as she likes a more traditional head shape. What's the best combination of woods to start off with - a 13 degree driver, or a 3-4 wood, and a hybrid or 2?

most of the women I've talked to or played with who were beginners were using 3 woods, not drivers...the question of FW vs. hybrid is always up for debate, I have friends who don't have a single hybrid and use 5W and 7W...I think you should have your GF try both and see what she feels more comfortable hitting off the deck. Maybe a 5W and a 5h, since the hybrid does work better when you're not in the short grass (and can double as a "chipper" from just off the green).

It's not how...it's how many

Used women's clubs are way more rare than men's but if you can find a decent set of Callaways they seem to combine forgiveness with a good balance point that is easy to learn with. Either X-20, X-22 or Razr X are all good and comparable. After that a 21-24 degree hybrid, real sand wedge and I think a real driver with plenty of loft. To learn to hit a driver you need to start with one, and the size of the face makes them hard to miss.

Rummage sale or Craigslist

Many people quit golf every year. My first set was a women's set (shorter) since I did not know any better. The gal at the rummage sale said get them out of my sight I never want to see them again.

Driver, woods, irons, putter, bag, balls and change in the pocket 5 BUCKS! Factoring in the change I paid $3.65

I just bought my girlfriend (who is 5'3) a cheap set of used womens "Gold Bear" (?) clubs to start with. We didn't know she would like golf so we decided to just get something for now and get a good set next year if she liked the game..

We are now looking for better clubs...... :( <--- me her---> :D

I bought my wife one of the full sets that include everything last month. I went with the Adams Speedline set and it's actually really nice. I hit her driver a few times and it honestly was really nice for the price I paid. ($370 for the full set from Overstock)

I think Dicks also has a set of Adams ladies clubs, a newer version than the one I bought

I'm an avid woman golfer (index 8.4) and I see many other women, especially higher handicap women) play Adams ladies clubs, and they all say they love them, especially the hybrids. Adams' sets come in woods/irons, wood/hybrids. I would suggest that most any beginner woman golfer would be able to hit hybrids much easier than irons. Try checking out eBay....there a many many used women's Adams sets available, for very little money. I don't think you could go wrong with Adams clubs that were only a couple years old.

Hey Kay...question for you. Coates Golf is marketing clubs specifically for women. Would that impact your decision in the event you were getting new clubs? Would you try them or would you stick with more familiar names?
