Which Tees for Junior Golfers during USGA Tourney's?

I have a friend with a 13 year old son that will be trying his first Junior events next Spring. He will still be 13 next Spring until early May. We were wondering which tees he would be playing from in USGA tournament, when he would have to move up, and if these events are handicapped.

I can't remember anything about Junior golf it's been so long ago...any help appreciated.

They are not handicapped... You have to be a 6.4 to get int he Junior AM or a 2.4 to get in the US AM, about the only tournament he can play in unless your trying to qualify for the US Open? They play from 6,900+ which is usually considered the TIPS on any course.

In other Junior Events he would be looking 6000-6500 depending on how they group the ages. 14 and up would usually be 6500+

National Junior Golf Scoreboard events are usually 6500+

Every USGA event for boys/men are tipped out and played at scratch.

At 13 does the young man meet the handicap requirements?

Not at all. He's just starting and wanting to meet some other players his age. He's a 20 handicapper right if I had to guess...

His goal is to make the school team in a few years when he is in high school. Our state, Arkansas, has the ASGA which has some events every year. They have kids that can flat out play and some that are there to have fun. I do remember they were flighted so he wouldn't be in the championship flight, possinbly 2nd or 3rd.

That's probably for the Junior Championship. Usually for regular tournaments they just divide it by age group..

If you are playing ASGA, I doubt they would play 13 year olds from the tips. I would say 6000+/- yards, 6500+/- yards is the standard for most HS age divisions, though in the more competitive tournaments 6800+ or the tips is the norm.

I agree with poster above--I don't see them flighting the tournaments.

In GA they do not flight state junior championship. 144 golfers are selected based on GHIN handicap. Cut after 2 days to (I think) to 70 players and ties.
