Mizuno MP 60 or Titleist 710 CB thoughts

bames

Recommended Posts

Sad, sad story. I've played my MP-60s for 4 years. I've never considered replacing them. Yesterday I hit a shot out of the rough and there happened to be a rock under my ball. Ouch. There is now a gash in my 7 iron and it got me thinking. Maybe its time to test the market.

I am currently considering the MP 68, Titleist 710 MB or CB. And I might just stick with my 60s. I'm just looking for any thoughts or reviews by anyone who has any experience with any of these. I am particularly interested in any comparisons between the 710 CB and the MP 60s.

Thanks

Well I have been in the same dilema with the CB, MB and MP 68 (and X Protos but you didn't ask about those). I'll make it short, for me, the CBs aren't the best for my swing because they are more of a diggers club and it was apparent when I tried them, but it wasn't a huge issue. As far as the MB vs. 68s, it really comes down to brand preference. The Mizunos are a tad softer and a little more muted at impact (I am not huge on that because I still like feedback on all good shots). The Titleist are almost as soft at impact and don't have as much of the muted feel, more of a solid strike feel that you feel a little more. As far as forgiveness, the MBs seem to be actually more forgiving than the 68s and launched a tad higher but there was a bit different conditions when I hit each so the Titleist may actually launch lower.

Honestly, I would just find another 7 iron online. I recently gave the 710 cb's a go and was very disappointed in terms of feel. The forging is nowhere near the quality of mizuno's grain flow forged. I recently put the mp 60's back in the bag after starting the season with the i15's and will not look back (the 710 cb's lasted less than a week). The mp-60 IMO was one of the most innovative and outstanding irons mizuno has ever made. They are a perfect balance of playability and forgiveness. The cut muscle moves the center of gravity to a point where launch angles are near perfect and the feel of well struck shot surpasses any forging I have ever played. I think the 60 will go down as one of the best irons of all time, it has a timeless, clean appearance at address, incorporates technology seamlessly, and gives players an option of forgiveness in a true player iron package. Get a new 7 iron and enjoy.

As you can see, the 710's offer less "offset" (most noticably in the short irons); more bounce; and are a degree and a half more upright than the MP's. Additionally, the blade lengths and heights (heel-to-toe and vertical) are smaller in the 710's and more of the club head's "mass" ("center of percussion") is centered behind, rather than below, the ball. My own experience, also suggests that the 710, like it's precursor the 695's, is easily one club longer than the Mizzy's, but with a higher ball flight than the 695's.

If you like the feel and spec's of your 60's...... The MP 62 would be a great club to add to your considertion... and the rebute to the prior members post regarding "the quality of the forging", Endo has done a very nice job for Titleist on their 710 CB's and MB's. Certainly on par w/ Chuo foundry used by Mizuno.

Hope this helps

This is precisely why I have played the 60s for so long. You know how it goes though, you start to get some crazy thoughts going about switching clubs and then the game has officially begun. I appreciate your thoughts, thanks

thank you for posting that. I am a spec guy so I appreciate that. I hadn't thought of the MP 62 so I'm going to look into those a little more now. Thanks again.

Bames:
We all get those crazy thoughts (even without getting a gouge in the clubs) :D I'm a mizuno fan and currently game the 57's. I hit the 68's and the Titleist AP2 710's. I was surprised by the Titleist AP2's. Very solid and definitely would consider them. Try both out and see which fits your style of play better. As one other poster said, if the clubs are working for you, why change. Just get a replacement MP-60 7 iron and go from there !

I say get a replacement 7 iron, cheaper and no adjustment period to get used to the new irons. Especially if you love them so much, you'll be coming back to them anyways. I game the 60s, LOVE them! Wouldn't even consider a different set.
Well I took the Titleist AP2s out for a spin. I think they fly a little high for my likes. I bet they were 8 yards longer than my 60s. Which doesn't bother me much because I would just bump up a club if I need more distance. They have a nice feel, but I've played my 60s for so long now I've had a hard time finding anything that feels as good (except for my MP 32 PW that is haha). So far I think I'm going to replace the 7 iron. I just haven't been convinced enough to switch to the Titleist. I need to find a 68 to demo now.

Thanks everyone for the thoughts, and I'm still open to any others. Great site, you all are tons of help.

I loved the MP-60s but have a problem with Mizuno and their seeming contempt for left handed golfers. (See my MP-32s, for sale here.)

Have a set of 710 CBs, and really like them. Not as good a feel as the MP-60s, but more workable and a bit longer. Plus I never cared for the MP-60 PW.

This said, nothing (except maybe the TA Protos I take delivery of today!) has come close to the Callaway X forged 09s for me. Looks, feel, distance, and even forgiveness. Its all there, with a dream of a sole grind. You should look at these, as Callaway has obviously dumped them and they are selling at ~ $500 on ebay right now. (I have 3 sets!)

Played the (older) AP2s and never liked the 8-PW...

 • 8 years later...

Just found a set of 60's with less than 10 rounds on them. IMO far superior to the 64's. The irons are flighted and were played extensively on the Hogan/Nationwide/Nike tours. Not for the feint of heart. If you're not a good ballstriker you would have hated them. I was a 3 when I gamed them 10-12 years ago. Awesome sticks. Better than any player's club Mizuno has out today.
