Oil Can Finish Problem

I have a C&L in the Oil Can finish and today I putted on some greens that had fresh fertilizer put down. The fertilizer basically removed the oil can finish from the bottom and most of the face. Are the places where the finish was removed more prone to rusting now? I not I may just remove the rest of the oil can finish for purely aesthetic reasons. What home remedy (not fertilizer) could I use to remove the oil can finish?

You can soak it in coca cola for aprox 4-6 hours and it will take the oil can right off.
Oil can is a finish that will naturally wear off over time as will the black ox finish. Rusting can and will happen, you can prevent the rust by making sure the putter stays dry and never put a damp putter in the headcover for an extended period of time or put a dry putter in a damp headcover.

Thank you for the quick reply. Will the coca cola hurt the shaft at all should I not be able to submerge just the head and once the oil can is removed should I continue to periodically put a coat of oil on it as before in addition to keeping it dry? Also, will the cola remove the paint fill?

dry and oil afer every use. the cola will only make the shaft sticky. wont hurt the finish.

I put a bit of oil in my headcover. Gets oiled after every use and keeps water from getting to the head.

I'd use CLR to strip it, mainly because it's much faster and there's no sticky residue. Submerge the head in it full strength for 10 minutes and the oil can will be gone. Wipe it with a towel and you're finished. Then oil it well. I prefer Rem Oil gun oil in the aerosol because it's easy, quick and effective if I can't get the stuff I normally use from work. I try to keep some CRC SP-350 on hand because it's silicone based and has a corrosion inhibitor in it. It works much better than anything else I've tried. If I'm out, though, Rem Oil gun oil it is. You can spray some inside the headcover, but if you miss anything when you wipe it off, it can cause it to rust faster (fertilizer/chemicals). I only use the headcover when on the course. Once I'm home, the cover comes off so both it and the putter can air out and not retain any moisture.

I have only used the coke to strip the oil can from my vokey wedges, but it did not harm the paintfill at all. All I do is fill a container up to the end of the hosel and let it sit for about 4 hours. then take it out and rinse and dry no stickieness issues when I do it that way.

As others have said there are other ways to do it but I find the the coke method as cheap convienent and easy. I have never had any issues with the plating on the Dynamic gold shafts with it either.

Cut down a 1 quart milk jug, clean and dry it.

Place it on the work bench.

Now place putter head in the bottom of the jug.

Lean the shaft against the wall.

Fill with your choice of stripper, coke or CLR to the top of the hosel.

This way you won't get any on the shaft.
