Comparison of the both Titleist Prototype Golf Balls

I currently play the 2007 version of the Pro V1x. I love the performance of this ball, its not perfect but its the best combination of driver distance and short game spin I have found. I like the feel of the ball, I would prefer it to be a little softer but its definately not a rock. My only two gripes about this ball are sometimes a full wedge shot will back up much more than I like and the cover shreds easily.

Pro V1 "test" ball (Black Numbers): I got a sleeve of these in August in a little white box. I immediately took them to the course and was very surprised by how they performed. Off the tee they launched a little lower than the current Pro V1, about the same as my 2007 Pro V1x, and spun about the same as the current Pro V1 resulting in about 2-3 yards more carry. I also found that the test ball spun more than the current Pro V1 on all iron shots, wedge shots and green side shots. I gained the most yards with my 3 wood, I have no idea why but I absolutely pounded a couple of three woods the day I tested this ball. Ironically hitting it through the fairway which was what I was trying to avoid. The feel of this golf ball was incredible; very soft and rather hot feeling. I reminded me of an NXT Tour, only a tiny bit firmer. Durability was top notch as well. The cover didn't shred at all and I hit a couple of pinched sand wedges with the intent of testing the cover.

Pro V1x "test" ball (Red Numbers): I recieved this sleeve of balls this week in the same white box. I definately was not over whelmed with the improvements in this ball. It played almost exactly like my 2007 Pro V1x. Tee shots hit with both balls were within feet of each other, and the same with iron shots. I did notice that the test ball felt a little bit softer off the irons than my ball, which I liked. The test ball was a lot more durable than my current ball, and after 18 holes my 2007 Pro V1x is on the way to the shag bag and the test ball needs a bath and its back in the bag.

Overall I think I will make the change to the new Pro V1x, if I keep my current driver. If I decide to get fit for a new driver, I will change to the new Pro V1 as I believe its that good.
