Poll - Do you use a GPS or any other Rangefinder?

Recommended Posts

Just curious whether the most avid of golfers use a GPS/rangefinder or still rely on old school yardage markers?

I use my rangefinder all of the time. Old school yardage markers are not just inaccurate (usually) but they give approximations to the middle of the green, not the flag. Also, it help to know its 190 to clear the water, that bunker out there is 255 if you want to cut the corner, and on and on.

They may be overrated
But I'm rocking one!

I'm not so good with my yardage control with my 6 iron clubs and longer but find the rangefinders helpful in that area but inside 150 yards is where I find them really useful, particularly inside 100. I really want to know my exact yardage inside 100 yards.

I use a GPS, but I just got a laser rangefinder, and used them both yesterday. It was really helpful to have access to both for different purposes. Anything past 160 yards, I'm just trying to get on the green, but anything from 150 and in, I'm probably going to go at the flag most of the time. The GPS was nice for layup yardages on par 5s, and when trouble was in the way.

I use GPS about 98% of the time but I also have a laser rangefinder when I want to know exact distances. My GPS is usually within 1 or two yards of the laser on local courses. I use the laser almost every time on the driving range.

I have a Leupold GX-1 laser and a iGolf Neo (now Bushnell) GPS. The Neo is nice for a quick 9 holes on familiar courses - very small, gives you front/middle/back, plus you can add some custom points or map the course.

I personally don't use one. I don't mind anybody using one as long as they don't hold up play trying to dial in a yardage. Rounds on public courses around here are already slow enough.

As appose to what? Walking off yardages from markers? GPS and Range finders are made to speed the game up. I've used my trusty old Sky Caddie SG2 for 6+ years. Love won't play a round without it.

I have the golflogix app on my BB Storm 2 and use it every round I play. It gives carry distances for trouble, water, and bunkers, as well as lay-up distances for 150, 125, and 100 on par 5s. I also have a laser that I use. It is a cheap bushnell that is marketed for hunting, so I didnt pay the premium for one marketed for golf specifically. The laser for me is best inside 200, and important inside 150. Anything over 200, and middle of the green yardage is fine. 150 to the middle can be anywhere from a PW to a 7i to the flag depending on the size of the green, and only knowing 150 just isnt good (for me) enough if you want to get somewhat close to the flag.

SGX and it's money...left without it recently and did okay but it wasn't precise. It's especially helpful on courses I don't play often or new coures I've never played. Have a Nikon rangefinder but it's on it's last legs...precise to the pin when it worked better. My son doesn't play that often these days due to full time student and job but a few weeks ago when we played together, he was nut on when I gave him yardages off the GPS. Next day when he played in another group, he was totally lost without it. Range time would help but time is what he doesn't have. Highly recommended...oh, and he wants one too.

I don't think I could play without my Bushnell range finder. It doesn't always pay off, but it gives me a lot of confidence knowing the exact yardage of a given shot. This is especially true inside 100 yards. Knowing the number has made me a much better wedge player.

I use my bushnell laser every round even at my home course that i know like the back of my hand. I tried the free trial of some gps apps when i had my iphone but never felt like i could trust the distances. I know with my laser its exact +-1yard.

The times I've encountered someone that was fast at figuring yardages without assistance, it's been when he's played the same tee's and course forever, using the same clubs, thinking he's got the yardages aced. The down side, least from my view is not only have their games have grown static, all too often using my laser their yardages guesstimates are off 1-3 clubs; partly because club yardages vary over time.

Can't tell you how many times I've said after that guy has it figured; yardage to the pin is "X". They do a double take, and go get a different club every time. Yep, everyone of them are relatively fast players, just not as accurate as they think. Have a good one.
