Should I exchange my GX-2 for a GX-3

Recommended Posts

Slope vs OLED
Bought a GX-2 rangefinder a couple of weeks ago and have been getting use to it. Takes me a few tries to get the pin and when I finally do, all I see is the number at the top (straight line yardage) and haven't even really used the slope corrected yardages because they are at the bottom of the screen. I played a new course yesterday that was very hilly and didn't even realize that I was not using the slope until the end of the round! And I still shot a pretty good score. I looked at both models extensively before I bought it and thought I would love the slope feature. But in reality if I never use it, should I get the GX-3 with the better display? They told me I had 30 days to exchange it.

i would say exchange it. i would say most, if not all, of us have more difficulty estimating distance on our own from the wind, not elevation. unfortunately, no range finder can help with the wind aspect.

the display change alone would be worth it, especially if you aren't really using the slope feature. this is the same reason i went with a non-slope model.

I have the GX3 and I think that it is the best of the small range finders. I also have the Bushnell V2. The GX3 is a bit more accurate, but more importantly, it works faster - sometimes I have to shoot the Bushnell a few times before I get the pin, not the garbage in the background.

I never considered the GX2 because I would not use the slope information - I do that myself as also taking into consideration the wind. Furthermore, the GX2 is not legal for tournament play - which says something to the importance of taking into account playing conditions - slope and wind - by yourself.

I recenly purchased a GX-4 and I've found that I typically use the straight line distance and factor in elevation and wind myself, as others have mentioned. It's almost always breezy/windy where I play, so I always have to factor that in anyways.

And I am not comfortable yet with how the unit does the calculation to adjust for slope and if it fits my ball flight. I would think that ball flight would be a big factor in adjusting for slope.

I haven't used the GX-1 or GX-2 with the LED, but I think the OLED is great! I also like that the GX-3/4 are an aluminum body and are more compact than the GX-1/2

While I do like that I have the slope feature available, I think I would be just as happy with the GX-3. The GX-4 was only about 10% more than the GX-3 for me, so that's one of the reasons I just went with the GX-4.

I did it! But they didn't have any GX-3s in stock so I have to wait until next week....bummer...

Still a good move. The OLED is great. If you don't use slope no reason to have it. The GX-3 is just overall better. Feels better, constructed better.

Got mine at lunch today. Will try it on course this afternoon :)

Let us know how you like the red OLED. Love this unit in scan mode.

It was great using it yesterday. So much better than the GX-2 in terms of locking on flags besides the obvious better display. I was getting the lock on "beep" and the flags didn't even have prisms. I think the GX-3 has a better laser. GX-2 couldn't read anything through the window at Golfsmith while the GX-3 hit the building across the street through the glass immediately! Both were set up with fog mode on too. I thought maybe that was the reason for the difference but obviously not.

I noticed that too. The GX-3/4 must have upgraded internals because they shoot through anything. Very quick to lock too. Furthest I have tried to laser a pin was 300 and I was able to hit it. Need to try on the tee of a par 5 some day.

If only the GX-3 had the GX-2 case. I liked the case that has the little bungee closure. I am afraid the magnetic one will open as I am carrying my bag.

I may be wrong, but I'm pretty certain the large number at the top is the tgr or the slope number, and the small number at the bottom is the line of site, but I could absolutely see where the red oled would be awesome. Just used my gx-2 for the first time and am very happy, but to each his own, good luck with your decision
