Amateurs with Staff Bags...Yes or No?(merged)

Recommended Posts

My uncle uses a Titleist Staff bag. If I were to guess, I'd say he is anywhere from a 18 - 20 handicap. It makes him no less of a person, and he is in no way a poser. He was given the bag by his uncle. He keeps his shoes, a jacket, and a ton of other stuff in it, so I'd say he is using it as intended. I'm the other kind of "hack", I like to keep as little as possible in my bag and change my shoes in the parking lot.

As an example Korean Titleist offerings:
http://www.titleist....gs/default.aspx

All major brands have their Aisa-spec (Japan spec for you). In here you can only play golf with caddie+cart. A bit annoying to have these huge bags. I can't fit the bag in the backseat of my 911.

At the range last saturday morning there were 2 guys immediately to my left, both had nice staff bags with their name on them. I actually thought they were pretty cool although I most likely would never have one myself. Its just entirely too much bag for me. IMO, a slightly scaled down version of a staff bag with a stand on it would be perfect. Something similar to the old Sun Mountain MPB but with the actual construction and material of a staff bag.

Better question would be to ask people who work at golf courses and what they think about having to lug around a staff bag for a hack...

Only reason to have one is its bigger, so no cramming your clubs in then you have a smaller bag. Cart bags are far more functional (tho I hate the C-130 just as much as staff bags) and often have far more pockets.

I played with a guy who had Johnny Miller's callaway staff bag (he said he is JM's brother in law)

Wasn't a great golfer himself but did not bother me a bit what kind of bag he had.

I am just busy to get up and down most of times so don't really care what others have as their bag.

However I pay attention to people with different putters and their putting strokes!

I heard it helps build your core strength while you're on the course....

But seriously, it's their money, their clubs, their back. They can go into a store and buy whatever they please. It's not like they need a license or certification to get a golf bag. It has no bearing on anyone else's game.

If I knew that I was playing against someone who was bothered by amateurs with staff bags, I'd be hauling the biggest baddest staff bag I could find. I'd probably also throw on a white belt, break out the blades and covers, and iron a few logos onto my shirt and hat. I might even get a caddy and make him wear my name.

I said no but its only because I'm stuck in this rule about staff bags; If it doesn't come free with your name on it, don't use one

What's wrong with white belts?

Seriously - I have a Callaway staff bag and used it for a long time, but I got tired of carrying the thing around. I love the bag, though, and I got it very near cost, so it was cheaper than any carry bag I could've gotten. I can't imagine why anyone would have a problem with what I use.

As for belts - what's wrong with having a little fun? My buddies and I play for the same goal - even if we have the worst rounds of our lives, we at least want to LOOK like we shot par. It's OK to have a little fun once in a while.

Ultimately I don't really care who uses a staff bag and if someone wants to come into the shop I work and spend $300 on a bag, great. I will definitely sell them one no questions asked. But I agree with your thoughts on staff bags for my own personal use. Never used one until it came free with my name on it.

I said no. For every reason already stated: it's too big, too heavy, doesn't have your name on it. I just have to ask why would you even contemplate buying a bag that costs twice as much as a light weight SM 3.5 or something. Plus staff bags do not have stands and are usually old school with one strap. I work in a shop too, and have multiple staff bags on sale with our sponsored staff's name on them. The bags are used more or less as storage for clubs or display. They refuse to play them and opt for lighter options.

LOL, i started one of the threads stating how much it bugged me that a buddy was carrying a staff bag around. Fast forward to today and I could care less. More power to him. I even have a staff bag now, but she hasn't seen the course yet. I just store my extra putters in it.

+1

Why must people worry about what someone else is doing? If they want to spend THEIR money on a huge staff bag, with THEIR name embroidered on it, then I say that is THEIR business.
Others equipment choices are not my business. But if I see something nice I'll
pass along a compliment. Everyone enjoys a positive comment about their equipment.
I'd had some nice rounds with complete strangers that started out with me offering a
nice comment about something they have. I have always found golfers to be the
friendliest sort of people. Camaraderie is part of the game for me.

"Indifferent" people are not usually good company. And judging by what I read on here
Most WXRERs are not indifferent, but rather extroverted when it comes to all things
equipment. Look at all the signatures and WITB picture threads. I don't buy that people
don't care what others might have. It's just that good manners keep us from being
negative about other golfers choices.

Sorry for the threadjack.

Can we please only start threads that everyone cares about.
Not sure we can start a thread that "eveyone" cares about, but there must be those who care about this one which is apparent by the fact that there are responses. Strangely enough, there even seem to be responses from people who dont care. Not sure I understand that.

these types of topics always amaze me and cause me to ask this one, simple question...

WHY DO YOU CARE IF SOMEONE _____________________?

a) plays blades and has a 12 Hdcp
b) carries a staff bag and shoots in the 90's
c) has a circle T putter
d) has "tour issue" equipment

fill in the blank with your ridiculous example.

Get over it. If we all did everything like you do, used your accepted clubs, etc., it would be one BORING world.
