Ben Hogan BH-5

Recommended Posts

Introducing the new Ben Hogan BH-5 irons, the first fully cast stainless steel irons in the Ben Hogan product line. 17-4 Stainless steel cast construction with extreme perimeter weight design provides maximum playability, control and forgiveness. Available in 2 different offsets so you can choose the right irons to fit your game.

Whoever said you can't buy forgiveness, never tried the new BH-5 irons.

I just purchased these 1 month ago when I decided it was time to invest in my first set of new clubs. I went to my local pro shop and demo'ed these, the Big Bertha 2004, Nike NDS, Nike Sling Shots, and the Ben Hogan CFT's.

I cannot give you a review on the clubs for shaping shots, etc, nor am I bias from one company to another (even though what's in my golf bag may indicate otherwise). I am just a beginner (< 1 year playing) and only understand 2 things; Trajectory and feel. Both sets of Nike Irons felt dead on impact but went relatively straight and high. The only way I could tell a good shot from a bad shot was where the ball was going and felt nothing in the club. The Big Bertha Irons felt OK, but for some reason I could not hit them straight as ever shot went to the left (I'm a righty). Both the Hogan BH-5's and the CFT's were very nice and I liked the feel of them. If you hit a good shot you felt it, if you didn't you knew the moment you made contact with the ball. I actually preferred the CFT's to the BH-5's, but the BH-5's were more in my budget. I have no regrets purchasing these clubs as they fit my swing. Well, my "work in progress" swing :vava:

My only gripe about the BH-5's is that the Metal seems soft. The sole seems to be getting beat up a lot faster than my brothers CFT's which still look relatively good after he owned them for a year. Also the face of my 7 iron it starting to get pitted from taking divots.

Thanks for listening,

Ray

OK, I finally have a regret with my purchase. I purchased the Regular model, and over the last month I still have been demo'ing alot of clubs. It seems that all the clubs that have more offset I hit much better, which would have explained why I had better results with the CFT's. So the offset version of the BH-5's probably would have suit me better. Unfortunately they didn't have those in when I purchased these, and I didn't even know they existed. But hey, I still hit these well, so I can't be that upset :clapping:

Thanks,

Can someone please shed some light on this:-

I read that the BH-5's were cast from 17-4 stainless steel which to my limited knowledge is very hard. However I have played irons with 431 stainless (Cobra) and forged stainless (Titleist 704) and still cannot explain the level of softness I feel with the BH-5's. I consider myself a pretty decent ball striker but friends have also commented on the BH-5's soft feel in comparison to their own sets.

Any comments?

I am not sure about the relative hardness of 431 vs 17-4 stainless - but I do know that the BH-5's feel pretty darn soft. I have always been a forged blade guy, but I was accidently shipped a set of BH-5's when I ordered a new set of Apex 2006 blades from a reputable seller. I decided to keep the BH-5's and use them while the Apex's were shipped. What a great club - easy to hit, great feel and awesome ball control! These will remain my early season gamers and back up set.

I am actually surprised that these did not go over all that well. They can still be found new, or almost new for next to nothing. Would make an EXCELLENT set of irons for someone starting out who wants a nice set that are forgiving...

They are nice looking irons. I just picked up a set at PIA - traded in a bunch of junk and got a set 3-pw on full trade. they look great. I am excited to try them out.
