Reshafting Mizuno MP30's

Hand Jockey

Recommended Posts

I purchased my Mizuno MP30's about 6 years ago. They have the Dynamic Gold 300 steel stiff shafts. I've enjoyed these irons over the years. However as I've aged my swing speed has gotten slower and I can see the effect. I can't get the heighth I once did with these irons or the distance.

If I reshafted these irons, is it possible that I could once again regain the heighth and distance? I demo'd some Ping i15 irons and could hit the ball much higher and actually picked up one club in length. These are some great clubs. However I still like my Mizuno's and it might be more economical to reshaft if I could get the desired results. Any opinions would be appreciated.

Thanks

The most economical thing you could do would be to softstep your irons with your S300's once or twice (although admittedly that might not get back enough of the desired height and distance, but should help some). if you did this you would only need to purchase 1 or 2 new shafts.

It could be flex of the shaft or the shaft itself. You could go to a higher launch shaft like a KBS or PX with a R or R+. You could always go and give the Mizuno shaft optimizer a try and see the results.

There are some other things helping in the i15.

i15s are progressive offset (less in PW and more as you get to 3I) where the MP30s are just pretty much standard low offset. Once you get past the 8iron in the pings, the offset would be more than the MP30s and it would be easier to

Thei15s also have 1* or 2* stronger loft I would guess which will give you more distance.

The DG shafts are the lowest hitting steel shafts, you will probably have better luck with some KBS or Project X shafts. Also going to a regular flex may help, how far do you hit a 7 iron?
[/quote]

With the Mizuno MP30's I hit my 7 iron 150 yards. With the Ping i15 irons i hit my 7 iron 160 yards.

Sorry, I'm not familiar with what the "softstep" process is???

You're probably ok with regular flex with that yardage. Softstepping is when you remove the shaft, and move them up a club. It makes them play softer than normal. For example you could move your five iron shaft into your six iron and then butt cut it to the right length. This softens the shaft approximately 1/3 of a flex. If you soft stepped twice (five iron shaft into seven iron) they would play pretty close to regular flex. If you did this you would only need to buy one, or two shafts for your longest irons.

It will help, but I don't think it'll help as much as moving to a reg flex higher launching shaft, like a KBS.

soft-stepping is when you take, for example, a 3 iron taper tip shaft and put it in a 4 iron, a 4 iron taper tip shaft and put it in a 5 iron, etc and then cut the irons to their correct length (this would be softstepping once). the 3 iron taper shaft is not as stiff as the 4 iron taper shaft so it makes the club play a bit softer (softer flex and higher launch). It is a way to create "in-between" flexes, similar to changing the tipping on a parallel tip shaft.

there are lots of threads on here about how to do it.

for your set (say you have 3-pw), if you wanted to soft step once you could:

buy 2 iron shaft and install into 3 iron
pull 3 iron shaft and install into 4 iron
pull 4 iron shaft and install into 5 iron
pull 5 iron shaft and install into 6 iron
pull 6 iron shaft and install into 7 iron
pull 7 iron shaft and install into 8 iron
pull 8 iron shaft and install into 9 iron
pull 9 iron shaft and install into pw (actually, i think with DG 9 and pw are same shaft so you wouldn't have to do this one)
