Varadero in Cuba?

Anyone play here recently?

I'm off to Cuba for a week in January and will be staying right across the street from the Varadero Golf Club. I've read some reviews but I'm curious if anyone has been there lately and what the conditions might be like. Any tips? Secrets? Thanks!

Grant, Not sure if your gone yet but I've played this course at least 30 times. First keep in mind that they have limited resources but do a very good job for what they have to work with. The course layout is actually fantastic with some very challanging holes. A couple of tips. Take one extra club on the par 3 8th, on the par 5 16th play 2 - 200 yard shots to stay out of the water and then wedge into the green, don't get bent out of shape if the conditions aren't pristine, and last check your cart for flat tires before you go out.

Brenngun, thanks for the reply. I just got back a couple of days ago and I must say I thought the course was great! I would definitely play there again especially considering the price. Our package included green fees and I brought my own clubs so for $30 a round (cart rental) I was in heaven. I've never golfed outside of Canada so it was a big thrill for me. Beats the heck of of the simulator that's for sure!

That 16th hole sure is a beauty and a real "course managment" kind of a hole. I chickened out on the woods, but I did get there with a 5-7-9 combo for a bogey. Yes!

I would recomend this course for anyone looking for reasonabley priced sea-side par 72 action in the gulf. And... where else are they going to drive you up to the clubhouse in a pink 59' Cadillac convertible for $5? Style baby!
