I use this one and I absolutely love it. You don't have to pay any fees if you don't want to, but of course I paid the $29.99 which allows you to download 50 courses. If you don't want to pay you can map courses yourself. Most courses in my area are mapped, and most have other points mapped besides front, center, and back of green. It takes 2 AA batteries which usually last me about 2 1/2 rounds. This device is a no-brainer.

Excellent product. I have used a Bushnell Laser Rangefinder (old model, difficult to get reading) and a Laserlink Rangefinder (excellent product but only works on courses with special reflectors on the flags). My home course has Laserlink so you can get an instant reading to the flag, not just front, middle or back pin. However, it will not give you distances to bunkers, water, carry distances, etc.

Today was the first time I used the iGolf and SD GPS unit. It arrived in 2 days after I ordered it. I didn't even pay for an upgrade in shipping. Nice going Amazon! The software was easy to install and the program worked very well. I registered and activated my account with iGolf and downloaded a course very easily. I stepped out of my office and got a gps reading within 15 seconds. All told the setup took about 15-20 minutes. BTW it is 5380 yards from my office to the first hole at my home course.

I took the unit to my home course after work. After a decent tee shot I drove to the 200 yd marker in the middle of the fairway. My iGolf unit read 201 yards to the center of the green. Every marker and sprinkler head was dead on. I am very pleased with the accuracy and ease of use.

I don't think the iGolf courses are as detailed as the Skycaddie courses. Some of the courses only have distances to the front, middle and back of the green. Some have hazards and other details included. However you can edit the courses that you have downloaded to include up to 8 custom points per hole. My home course had many extra points included and I went out today (first time I used it) and was able to map several other points very easily. I added carry distances for some hazards, and distances to layup areas to know what club to use to bail out for safer shots. It is more difficult to do this with a rangefinder and the Laserlink model that I have will not give me a distance other than to the pin.

Another thing to consider is that the distance to the front, middle and back of the green is measured from the perspective from the middle of the fairway. If you are far away from the middle of the fairway the yardage to the front and back of the green will measure that the point along a line from the middle of the fairway, not from where you are. The middle of the green will remain the same. However, most of the time you only need a measurement to the middle of the green. I can use my Laserlink to find the specific distance to the pin if it is in a different location. Most of the time I aim for the middle of the green anyway to be safe. For my home course I probably will go back and take custom measurement for the right, left and front of the green to compensate so I will always know what the distance is to the periphery of all of the greens.

I have seen the Skycaddie and similar gps units. However, I don't want to pay $30 or more every year for a subscription fee. With Skycaddie if you don't pay the subscription fee you do not have access to the courses that you already paid for. That's ridiculous. I don't know how other gps golf units work but I have seen others with subscription fees as well.

With iGolf you pay $35 and you get 100 golf course downloads. Once you save them to your computer they are yours. I plan to backup mine on several computers. I don't know about you but I probably will never play that many courses in my lifetime. I have my home course that I play 90% of the time and a few local public and private courses. I downloaded many of the local courses and some of the courses in SC and Cal that I have played and still have 70+ downloads left in my online account with iGolf. So far I have only found 1 course that they do not have in their database. It is a course that just opened last year.

I would highly recommend this product to any golf gadget enthusiast. It doesn't have all of the bells and whistles of the Skycaddie or Golflogic or other units but I don't have to pay an annual fee just to use my gps device. I bought the software and gps package. You can also buy just the software if you already have gps with your palm. I also considered the iGolf Neo GPS unit which shares many of the features of the version that I have. I wanted a unit that would work with my Treo phone. The reviews for the Neo are very positive as well. It uses the same course database.

Buy it—you'll love it. I'm playing a new course this Friday—can't wait!
