Modern Day Equal to Titleist 983E Driver

Recommended Posts

I read an article recently about practicing with your old smaller head driver to improve impact accuracy. So I get out my old Titleist 983E driver with Grafalloy Blue shaft and start practicing with it. Low and behold, I hit it better than my current 909D2 and for now its now in the bag. It started me thinking what current driver and shaft would be similar to this setup and was hoping you guys could help me. I hit the 983E with lower spin and straighter than I am the 909D2. Thanks in advance for your input.

Nothing you can get here. Maybe the yonex driver that ryo is bagging but that's it.

The 983K was 365cc of awesomeness

Maybe progress up the cc ladder into a Titleist 905S @ 400cc, or up to the 460cc monsters in a Ping i15 or a Adams 9015d, both of which are low spin, fade biased offerings. I have played all of these and must admit, nothing comes close to the feeling of centering the small headed 983E deep faced balpeen hammer!

Some flavor of the month driver.
Some driving iron for Links courses.

A hybrid to save my bad shots.
Titleist blades when I feel lucky otherwise something more forgiving.
A Vokey wedge or 2.
I hate every one of my 17 putters.

Why not just play the 983E? It has the critical technological breakthrough, e.g. COR 0.83 and a variable face thickness. I currently play the 983K and I have no plans on changing it this decade.

The only thing you might want to do is get it retro fitted. Shafts have seemed to improve a lot over the last few years, but I still play the original one, a Prolite.

I used a 983k for a couple of years.. I now have a TEE CB4 Tour Driver with the RIP shaft. That combo I think is very similar to the 983E.. The K had to much spin for me and the CB4 has very low spin and feels very similar to the 983k.. I suggest you try one out.

Funny this thread popped up, as I just picked up a 983E to mess around with. I've yet to play more than a 4 holes with it, but on the range, I am getting MUCH better results with it than I am with my 9064ls LDA. I'm gonna go up this friday and try to pick out an xflex shaft for it, but I freaking love the way this thing sets up!

Tai, when are you coming out here again? I want to swing that yonex, it looks soooo sick! Ive seen a few new ones on ebay for $350, no idea if thats a good price or not.

@ 350 it depends on the shaft.. if the shaft is a good one then 350 is a good deal.

To the OP.. all I have to say is:

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I'm going to leave the 983E in the bag for awhile. Hit my longest drives with it but when I'm a little off, it really strays. Is it the head or the Grafalloy Blue shaft that is reducing my spin so much? My 909D2 averages around 3000 and the 983E is around 2000.
Thanks

I think its mainly the shaft. The graf blue is a very low launch low spin, tip stiff shaft. I have it in my 905s right now and it is the best shaft I've played. Very stable, stouter than some would prefer, but it gets the job done. I liked it so much that I bought a tour version and another regular version as backups.

The Blue is a very unique shaft for it's bend profile. Yes it's tip stiff, but it's middle and lower mid section is extremely stout. You've got a head/shaft combo that's giving you a very strong flight, go with it, do not ever sell it. Make something else force it out of your bag, if you feel the need, but always hold on to this one.

  • 6 years later...

Just went thru a driver fitting with Club Champion to only find out that my Titleist 983e still wins even in 2018 with modern drivers and 300.00 shaft upgrades. 106mph/2652 = 267yd. carry. All this with a 43” shaft. I think I’ll leave in the bag.

Dude you just revived a 7 year old thread right after making a new thread saying the exact see thing. ?

I guess he's very excited! :D

It's got me looking at a 983E. I have a 983K in collection. I just picked up a 983E 9.5 degree and a UST Mamiya AXIVcore Tour Red 79 stiff shaft to experiment with. I have gamed a 905T with UST Mamiya AXIVcore Tour Green 65 stiff shaft and really liked that combination. I went with the heavier shaft for lower torque to see if shot dispersion tightens up a wee bit. I game a 2016 TM M1 driver so we will see how old (and smaller) technology compares to the 430cc M1.

What shaft are you playing in it? How's the dispersion? Distance on misshits?

I've been toying with picking one of these up. I'm close to your wheelhouse swingspeed wise.
