Love Noah's Mill. Can't get it here in VA, but a friend of mine picked me up a bottle when he was on a work trip in NOLA.....he said there were 15 bottles on the shelf.
Noah’s Mill was widely available here about 4 weeks ago. I’m not sure since as I haven’t gone to a store in that time but it is a really enjoyable bottle.
I won't pay over $200 for any Scotch / Bourbon unless it is very special and I am gifting it to someone special. So in other words, almost never. Not to knock anyone who is a "collector" and thinks the value is going to go up, whatever, knock yourself out, but I like to drink what I buy. As it is, I spent $189 on Kentucky Owl which is pretty steep for a Rye, and it is quite good, but after a couple of tastes I feel like I should save it when some friends come over, not just sip it myself while watching Netflix!
When McKenna won, I did run out and buy three bottles at $30 per. Gifted two, drank the third at home, and last month got lucky and came across a bottle at $45 which was not too outrageous so I bought it. The $50 - $60 range is pushing it for Bourbon and I don't mind paying it when I am getting something really good and will finish it off at home no problem; no need to "collect" it. This week it is Smoke Wagon, get yourself some, surprising how smooth it is at 100 proof; really surprising coming from Las Vegas.
I still dabble in the Scotch; almost always single malts, but again, never would pay $200. I am lucky though, I have friends in the industry in Scotland, so I can get some of the best whenever I get over there. I do like those blends from Hibiki...really easy to drink.
I'm of similar mind. Bourbon is meant to be enjoyed. I suppose I should clarify that when I say "collection", I mean "inventory". Most of the bottles I have are open, save for a few higher end ones that I'm saving for a special occasion.
Big fan of McKenna....I've now made it my brother-in-law's favorite bourbon....I have one for myself and another waiting to give him as a gift when all this COVID stuff is over with.
I'm trying out a few different Scotches.....still pretty new to that game compared to where I am with bourbon.
I just ordered a bottle of Smoke Wagon Uncut Unfiltered - had it in Vegas last Spring and really liked it but it fell off my radar. I've had half dozen bottles of McKenna - 1 really good, 4 good and one that was not great. I'm not a collector and drink what I buy. I do have an OKI 12 year and an Eagle Rare 17 year, but I didn't buy them. I have opened the OKI and will open the Eagle Rare after I drink through some more of my stash. I rarely buy a bottle over $75 - there seems to be an awful lot of good American whiskey out there under this price point. Four Roses Small Batch Select and Bulleitt Blenders Selection are two current favorites for under $60. I'm also a big fan of the Willett 4 yr. old, Noah's Mill, Rowan Creek, and Old Bardstown estate lineup. And the Old Forester lineup is tough to beat IMO - the 1910, 1920 and Statesman in particular.
Bourbon is totally overpriced right now due to that fire at 1792 in ‘18 and the Jim Beam fire in ‘19. But, I’ll still buy up to the 60 buck range.
Decent buys for me have been by my wife when she travels to New Orleans every quarter for work—Eagle Rare is usually a must buy as is Willet or Weller. Blantons has become overpriced out of my comfort buy range.
Decent local buys on a regular basis for me are: Horse Soldier, Elijah Craig small batch, Jefferson’s small batch, Walking Stick, Buffalo Trace, Four Roses.
There are a few Japanese Bourbons at a decent price range but haven’t been daring enough to buy some. I got burned last time when someone told me to buy High West. I absolutely despised it.
Any good Ryes one would recommend? I’m on an Old Fashion kick at the moment. Horse Soldier mixed nicely for it.
Best to you all and stay well.
I've bought my first 4 ryes in the last few weeks. Sazerac Rye is delicious. Willet, I'm still deciding on. First pour was tons of dill but I think the bottle is mellowing out a bit. River Set is alright, really sweeter not much rye kick. Lip Service is finished in wine barrels. The nose is mainly wine and it's sweet. It's good to sip on but probably not for a true rye enthusiast.
Right now I'm switching gears and looking for something cheaper that holds up to ice really well. About to open up the pool and can't wait for heat and hanging out outside. I need recommendations. Probably should learn to make some drinks like an old fashioned so I don't get bombed out fast as well.
Sazerac Rye is fantastic.....if your wife is in NOLA quarterly, she should have no problem getting a ton of it for you. You can also give Willett 4-year rye a shot, if you can get your hands on it....very good.
Bulleit Rye is my go-to. WhistlePig Rye 10 year is one of my faves.
Willet, Templeton, Pikesville, Michter's and Bulleit are all solid ryes imo. Bulleit is my go-to for old fashioned's.
My old fashioned recipe: one mashed up cane sugar cube, a few splashes of orange bitters, rye bourbon of choice, a little pour of water. Stir in a mixing vessel and pour over a whiskey cube in a proper glass then wipe the rim down with an orange peel garnish.
A nice little twist includes adding a 1/2 shot of grand marnier or adding an orange wedge and squeezing or muddling it into the vessel before mixing.
Nice! I'm gonna give old fashions a try this week.
On other fronts, scored a bottle of Elijah Craig Barrel Proof A120 yesterday! Went in to get myself an Easter bottle of OF 120 but they had literally just put two bottles of the EC on the shelf for for some lucky folks to grab. Very excited to open it today.
one of my favorites, such a simple recipe. I prefer a good Manhattan with blantons but just cant get right.
A little light from Costco during this time—my local store just got a shipment of bourbon!
They are only allowing you to buy one type of bottle, one at a time.
So, I picked up a bottle of Eagle Rare, 1792, Buffalo Trace, and EH Taylor small batch!
All were reasonably priced too! It’s been a pretty good day. 👊
Stay well everyone.
finally found my weller 12 at 34.99 here in jersey. now on the hunt for the full proof!
Where in the world did you find weller 12 for that price?? Were all the bottles snatched up in one shot?
Just opened up my EC Barrel Proof after winning a $150 poker hand. It's so good!!!
It was 1 per customer and it seems like more and more places are getting it now that the bars a closed.
Uh oh.....apparently people are hoarding bourbon like they are toilet paper
Hey guys. So Dr. Bob Jones IV (Bobby's grandson) decided to distill whiskey and bourbon. It's called the clover. Looks awesome, love the branding. Has anyone tried it? Also I'm trying to find some but apparently its only available at select golf courses. If not I figured id share a a link for you all to take a gander.
I think I saw that brand in Florida a few weeks back but I dismissed it pretty quick due to having the old celebrity name attached.
Picked up 2 bottles of 1792 FP and a bottle of midwinter nights dram @ retail yesterday. Good score for SoCal. Also have a lead on a blantons re-stock tomorrow morning. Going to be an expensive week.
Got a bottle of Blantons a few weeks ago that I'm holding off on opening as long as I can!
Not a bad rye for the price
I cannot find in my local ABC stores in central Virginia. No Buffalo Trace either.
Where in central VA are you?? There are four bottles (375 ml) at the ABC in Goochland and twelve at the ABC in Lake Monticello right now. Buffalo Trace can be tough to score in VA lately. There are a few bottles here in VA Beach, but I have a few in my collection already.
You pretty much have to find out what day of the week your store gets deliveries, watch the online inventory on that day, and then be there as soon as they open.
How do you find the stores inventory?
