Calling All Byron Morgan Ho's!

A little advice needed
I've been over at puttertalk and stalking the BST and ebay for a while looking for some nice Byron Morgans to pop up. I've talked to Dave and he's been very helpful. I may end up ordering my own if I can't find anything but I can be patient for now seeing I'm from Michigan and golf season isn't for another 8 weeks or so. I really like the looks of the 007 and am pretty set on carbon steel. If anyone has any experience/recommendations as to the finish that would help. I'm a little torn between the brushed blue oil and the cold star finishes at the moment, but would like to hear from some of you who have some Byron experience.
Thanks in advance!

I think the biggest factor in deciding the finish is maintenance. The coldstar is a plating and will need less 'care' than an oil finish. Both are great finishes, just comes down to personal preference.

That's it pretty much.

The Brushed Blue oil on Carbon will need some care, but you get a more personal artsy finish since no two are exactly the same. Blue oil on stainless requires really no care. I prefer the Blue Oil on carbon over Cold Star. It's almost as dark as black oxide, but you get some unique coloring.

Don't over look black oxide either. The black ox treatment is a classic and makes the paint fill pop the most.

Can you post any pictures of what the blue oil on cold star looks like, I'm really interested in a finish with some coloring.

I've have both the Blue Oil and Coldstar finishes. The Coldstar will be extremely durable and will prevent the carbon steel from rusting. The Blue Oil will not, you'll have to oil the putter regularly to ensure it doesn't rust. As for the differences in feel, I'd say it's negligible. The face milling and face thickness will have a bigger affect on how the ball feels coming off of the face.

Keep in mind that the Coldstar finish will take longer because Byron has to send them out for plating. Blue Oil can be done in house by Byron himself.

If you're going with carbon you should also look into the satin Black Ox finish. It's actually very durable and looks great from address. I've had a few putters with this finish and it's probably my favorite. Also, Byron can apply the finish himself.

i thought the coldstar was a raw carbon finish, similar to black ox? i don't believe it's plated.

Yeah cold star is a plated nickel finish.

I don't mind the maintenance of the blue oil finish, I've had black oxide putters before, just wondering how it will hold up over time with the spastic Michigan weather.

For what it's worth I have a PP Mil-Spec I pick up recently that has amazing feel to it. A nice crisp sound with that underlying softness of carbon steel. I assume tht what a cold star finished head would feel like.

I didn't word that very well. I mean I personally like Blue Oil better than Cold Star. Cold Star is definitely one of those things that looks better in person though. in pics it always looks sort of flat and just simply dark grey. In person it has more character.

The feel of carbon steel with just a non-plated finish is second to none, and most of my putters are finished that way.

That said, I just bought my "dream" Byron. A copper plated carbon 006 with a sound slot. It very audibly tells you when you miss the sweet spot, but feels wonderful when you hit it perfectly. Plus it looks cool both polished or patina'd. I'm dying for the weather here to get a little more decent so I can go roll this on a real green!

My input on feel would resemble the feedback already posted on here. The carbon Blue Oil feels incredible.. it's VERY soft, especially with the "tight tuna" milling. If you like a really low maintenance and a clickier/firmer feel, the Cold Star is really sweet. My Cold Star DH89 got a lot of playing time, and was my go to putter vs. the Bombora in Blue Oil. It's a great finish for a gamer, the Blue Oil will require more maintenance and will require oil periodically.

Awesome putters!

I've been thinking of ordering a GS DH89 from Byron, will the black ox finish work with GS?
Black oxide is applied to carbon steel. German steel is stainless and it will not hold the oxide treatment. Carbon steel is more porous, so the oxide type treatments soak into the metal (I think that's how it works?) For German steel you can have the various platings applied such as copper, cold star, Mystic Pearl or black PVD (which looks like Black Oxide). Also Blue Oil works well on stainless putters and carbon putters, but it looks much darker on carbon putters.

Don't forget the flaming option for German Stainless.

I love brushed Blue Oil on stainless putters. Can't wait to see the patina develop on my putter.
