Courses in Knoxville TN

Good course, usually in good shape. There are definitely shotmaker's holes and holes for bombers. The par 3's are great mix of holes. If the greens are mowed tight, they can be silly fast and punishing. The course has several severe dogleg holes which can drive you crazy (#1, #2, #9, #10 & #11), but overall you should have a fun round.

Depending on what side of town you are staying on, I'd recommend Willow Creek, Egwani Farms, Sevierville Golf Course. The Wee Course is one of the best Par 3 courses I've ever played and you will use every club in your bag playing from the tips.

Three Ridges is an OK course. It has a few goofy holes that I don't care for. There are several courses within 45 minutes or so away that are alot better. In no certain order.

River Islands
Rarity Pointe
Avalon
Rarity Bay
Tellico Village-3 courses

Rarity Bay and Tellico Village may be close to an hour from Knoxville but worth it. Willow Creek is a little $$$ for me and Ruggles Ferry is pretty good but can get busy.

Depends on how far you want to drive. There are 3 courses in Tellico Village that are good and Rarity Bay off Exit 72 on I75. WindRiver off exit 81 is a great course. There is a neat course called Lambert Acres in Maryville. It has 27 holes and has an old school feel.

This is how I would play them. All are probably within 45 minutes of downtown Knoxville

Links at Kahite-Tellico Village
River Islands
WindRiver
Toqua-Tellico Village
Avalon
Rarity Bay
Tanasi-Tellico Village
Lambert Acres
Willow Creek
Three Ridges

I think you can still play all 3 of the Tellico courses. They used to have coupons at Edwin Watts.

Please let us know where you played and your impressions of the courses.

Considering the population, the Knoxville area has a lot of good public access courses. Regardless of which side of town you are on, there is a good course within 30 minutes of you. On the east side, River Islands; west side Avalon, Wind River, Willow Creek (in that order); south side - Eqani. You won't go wrong with River Island, Avalon (tough, tight, and undulating slippery greens), Wind River (pretty course). Rarity Bay is also nice, but 40 minutes from west Knoxville.

Also, do not pass on the Wee Course. It is the best par-3 course you will play.

And yes, I did leave Three Ridges off my list.

Going to be in Knoxville next week for a concert. Looking to play Tuesday. Thinking Willow Creek or River Islands. River Islands looks to be about $20 cheaper. Any other Public Course suggestions?

I would play Willow Creek over River Islands. Both are great courses. Check with Willow Creek first though because they are supposed to be replacing their greens this summer. Not sure when that is supposed to take place. I would also suggest Egwani Farms. Fun course to play.

I am a Knoxville local, but have played golf in just about every state in the southeast and several other states. I can honestly say that Willow Creek is one of the worst golf values I have come across. The course is usually in fair shape, but the layout is boring...very boring. Most of the staff, especially in the proshop, are incredibly unfriendly too. The rate - around $60 for peak times- is extremely too high for the course. I have played Willow a dozen times or more and I have been unhappy with my experience just about every single time. The only positive things I can say about the course are 1) if you are looking for an easy course, this is the one (wide open, large fairways, not terribly long, very few forced carries), and 2) it is one of the easier courses in the area to walk. Don't let Willow Creek be your Knoxville golfing experience.

As far as public courses, try River Island or Rarity Bay. River Island is tough from the tips, but is a fun layout. The new greens are nice, but firm. Great price. The biggest negative about River Island is the time it takes to play it. I have never gotten off the course with a full round in less than 5 hours. Rarity Bay is a great deal after noon. It is a bit of a drive, though. One of my favorite layouts in the area. Rarity Pointe, which was recently rebranded as Wind River, is a decent course. Avalon is hit or miss. I haven't played there since fall 2011. As many have said, the Wee Course is fun for what it is. Avoid most of the muni courses. Avoid Dead Horse and Royal Oaks in Maryville. If you can get on at Holston or Fox Den, go for it. Tennessee National is also nice.

It would help to know what area you are staying in. If downtown, Rarity Bay and Wind River are a bit too far. If out west, Rarity Bay and Wind River aren't too far.

You will enjoy it. If you have a couple of hours to kill and want to play another quick round, visit the Wee Course, which is about 5 minutes from downtown Kville.

Bumping an older thread: I'll be back in Knoxville for a few days next week, and I'm hoping to get 9 in after work at least one of the days.

Staying near Turkey Creek.

FYI, I'm cheap. I like the idea of a $10-12 9 hole greens fee (i.e., I typically play munis.)

Dead Horse seems to be very close to where I'll be--is it that bad? Other suggestions for cheapish public courses west of town?

Dead Horse was in rough shape last time I played there about a month ago. It is cheap though. Golfgoob is spot on with his Centennial recommendation. Willow Creek is out west, but they want $30 to walk 9. It is in decent shape, but it isn't worth anything close to $30 to walk 9. I haven't played Knox Muni in years, but it is comparable to Dead Horse. Centennial is your best bet. You could also get a one day pass to Fairways and Greens. Great practice facility with a little loop.

If you are in the Turkey Creek area, Windriver is not that far and cheap rates are available on golfnow, Avalon is a much closer, but is going to be $10 more. Both are nice tracks, with Avalon being somewhat tougher. Dead Horse is cheap, though funky layout; but it is a place to hit a golf ball, and an easy course to walk (its biggest plus).

If you are going to invest four hour, want to ride, go to Avalon.

Much prefer Avalon over Centennial, better greens, layout, staff

Well, I played 9 at Dead Horse, and it beat me.

The pun was too easy to let it slide.

Walked the front 9 with three younger guys--I thought I was still young at 34, but these guys were probably in their mid-20's. Friendly locals who play there almost weekly.

The greens were odd. Recently aerated, missing grass in a bunch of places, muddy, but in spots rock-freaking-hard. Like putt up the hill, miss it, and have it roll back past you.

Third hole--what a rough hole. Dogleg left, with water left and right. I lost one in the woods far right, and three in the water. I picked up after that.

Otherwise, not an awful track for $12/9 holes, but if I get more time to play next time I'm down here, I'll probably play Centennial. Drove past it today--looks freaking gorgeous, at least from the road.

Drove past Fairways and Greens today as well--that's a nice looking facility. Did I read that it's member's only?

There is a Big Brother/Sister charity tournament tomorrow at Three Ridges. I hear Sir Charles will be playing, as well as Kevin Durant and several other celebs.

Got out to play a quick 9 and Dead Horse was the most convenient option. The course is in TERRIBLE condition. Mud holes in most fairways. The ponds are really dirty and stagnant. The smell is almost unbearable. They have lost or are losing just about every green. Hole 5 (par 5) is completely gone. They had to take out the green and have a temporary green put in place about 275 yards out.

Willow Creek is in the process of switching their greens over to championship bermuda. They have temporary greens right now. Not sure when the new greens will be ready.

For those that didn't see it. We are having an East TN GolfWRX outing at River Island on Saturday morning - July 27th. Three tee times from 9:27-9:45. $37. There are still a couple of spots open. Should be a good time. PM me if interested.
