Irritated with Ping S-59 Tours

Recommended Posts

I got my brand new set of ping S-59 tours last week. They were a replacement set after my first set had rusted throughout the set. This happened over a years time. After ping repolished and refinished them 2 times with the same results---rust everywhere in a very short period of time, they finally decided just to replace them.

Well after two rounds and several buckets of balls the 5 and 8 iron are developing rust in the cavity near the lettering and in the notch on the back of the hosel. These were supposedly coated with ping's new guyson coating. Obviously they have a problem with some of the these irons and I've been "lucky enough" to get a couple of sets. I suspected that polishing the tumbled finish away would have negative effects but I couldn't get ping to agree. I even asked them to build me a set of S-59s in the original finish with a ferrule. Wrx refused to do this. I suppose I could ask for a set of S-59s to replace these and do it myself. I've learned my lesson no more polished irons from ping. Oddly enough I have not experienced the problem on any of my tour wedges so go figure. By the way I clean them the way I have always cleaned all of my irons with water, brush, and a towel.

ARRRGH quite irritating.

That is very strange as they are 100% Stainless Steel. The guyson finish is NOT a coating - it is a bead blast finish. The polish is just that - not Chrome plating, just polished raw SS. I have had my set since November and played them all winter in Washington wet weather with no rusting... and I've played Ping irons for about 4 years with no rusting in the past. I'll sell you my set if you want a proven no rust set :P

Maybe it's dirt??!?!

No it's not dirt just red splotches coming out of the "guyson" finish area---not the polished this time. There is also a black pit in the notch area that has rust coming out of it. You can put a toothpick into it. I am now tired of this silliness and the dealer will see if they can get a store credit for my irons. I may buy a standard set of S-59s and ferrule them myself or just by someone else's club.

Mold perhaps?  Anyway that really sucks about the irons, I know that my next set will most likely be pings, they just rock.

I tried some of that rust stopper and it did indeed turn the rust spots black just like all rusted metal. I think if you stay away from the polished tour irons you will be just fine. The old tumbled 17-4 stainless has always been excellent and that is what they use in the new i5 and G5 irons.

That is the first complaint I have ever heard of any Pings rusting.  I have 4 different models of Pings and never had that experience.  If you hadn't sent it back to the company for repair, I would have suspected they were counterfeit.

I would think they would replace the irons at no charge since they are obviously not to their standard.  I play the S59 Tours and never had any problems.

I've owned/own every iron in every metal that ping has ever made and never had any rust problems with what amounts to over 37+ sets over the years. That is why I am so disappointed with both of these sets. As an old metalurgical engineering professor of mine used to say there are no flukes in material science.

Sandy,

Would you mind taking some pictures of the irons and the rust spots for me?  I would really like to see that.  It's not that I don't believe you.... I'd just like to see!!!

The first set was a "better" example as all the irons were a mess (after a year), only a couple of irons in the second set (after a couple of buckets and rounds) had started to go and other than the sole I don't know how well a photo would have shown them. But the second set is already on it's way back to ping with the instructions to not refinish or replace these irons. I'm tired of dealing with the polished versions. At this point I would be pleased with a store credit just to be done with it all.
