Project X PXI 6.0 Shaft Review

Recommended Posts

Just wanted to drop an overview of the relatively new Project X PXI shaft. I am a 12HCP (31 years old) playing Titleist AP2 712 from 4-PW (Project X PXI) with a 52,56,60 wedge combo (Dynamic Gold S300).

Approximately 18 months ago, I was fitted using a trackman to Dynalite Gold S300. It was originally between the Dynalites and the Project X Rifle 6.0. I found the Project X to lack feel at the top of the swing and also through impact; although the numbers were good. The Dynalites however, felt superb and launched the ball well. The numbers were not as good as the Project X Rifles but the shafts felt way better. I decided therefore, to go with the Dynalites.

Over the last 6 months or so I have gained some clubhead speed throughout and found the Dynalites were launching a little high and didn't seem to flatten out as much as I wanted, especially with the shorter irons.

I decided to give the Project X PXI 6.0 a shout and see how they felt in comparison based on some of the reviews I have read. I went ahead and purchased a 6 iron Project X PXI 6.0 shaft and a 9 iron 6.0 shaft.

When they arrived the first thing i noticed was how good they looked; they truly are a superb looking shaft. I got the 6 and 9 re-shafted and headed out to the range to give them a try. I was feeling a little sceptical as there had been so many positive reviews on these shafts. I was also a little concerned regarding the flex as 6.0 was listed as Stiff+.

What happened next was unexpected!! Very few times have I been truly dumbfounded by golfing equipment! These shafts felt unbelievable.... They are extremely smooth, and felt fantastic throughout the swing. The whole shaft felt very controlled and the trajectory was exactly what I was after. I immediately purchased the remaining shafts and got them fitted asap. I also didn't need to be concerned regarding the flex. They felt similar to the Dynalites in stiffness, perhaps a little firmer.

I played my first round over the weekend, and the first thing i noticed was how much control over the ball flight you actually have. I will admit they do launch higher than i was expecting, but no where near what I was getting from the Dynalites. I was concerned they may be a little light, but in all honesty I have not noticed any difference. I have also, without doubt gained yardage throughout all irons. I will need more time to understand how much further the ball is going, but to give an example, there is a 163 yard Par 3 I usually hit 7 iron to on my course. I teed the ball up and took my usual 7 iron swing, and was amazed to find it was too much club. I immediately hit an 8 iron and it was perfect so at first glance it seems I have picked up at most a club length.

So to sum up, I would not put anybody off giving these shafts a try. I was sceptical, and as far as I am concerned they are the real deal. I realise they wont be for everyone; but I felt compelled to get a review up.

Looks - 5 Stars

Feel - 5 Stars

Consistency - 5 Stars

Ball Flight - 4 Stars

On a seperate note, I also had the graphics placed underneath the shaft as they are a little busy. Not sure if it would have made any difference but they still look superb.

Thanks for posting, this is a shaft that I am interested in and like you I should go down the route of getting a couple of irons re-shafted to see how they perform

I tried one installed in a 5 iron about 2 months ago and I would agree that it was VERY nice.

I'm thinking about getting one installed in a Callaway Prototype hybrid when they are available.

Great write up. I tried the PXI 6.0's in a Miura CB501 and they did feel amazing. smoother than the PX's and a lot more feel. Great review!

Nice! Thanks for posting that.

I love the Dynalite shaft, fits my swing well. I hit moonballs with them in the wrong head though, they fit my MP29s perfectly. I like the old satin set of PX 5.5s I gamed for a while many years ago, they were a littIe heavy though.

I'm into a set of Nippon 950's now, in a set of MP60/32 combos. I have a set of Nippon 1050's in Xstiff coming in for some MP33s.

Tough to find softer tipped, lightweight shafts that don't launch too high..

Thanks for posting. Just curious, what is your typical shot shape and did the pxi 6 straighten it out at all compared to the dynalite s300?
Typical shot shape has always a been a draw, with my miss being left. First 30 mins of practice with the PXI were all dead straight with maybe a hint of fade. Since then I have resumed my consistent draw with all irons. Not sure if to read anything into that, it may have been a bit of anxiety/nervousness with the new shafts. I have definately gained yardage though.

Just to post a quick update to the review, I played two rounds with these over the weekend, one on Friday and one on Saturday. These irons have improved my consistency massively. I won a golf team event Friday shooting 37 points off a 10 HCP 2points lower than I should have been playing. Saturday, my front 9 was poor (+10) but managed to minimise the damage with my iron play. The back 9 was much improved and managed to come in +4.

Anybody wanting to give these a try, I would recommend you go ahead!

What's your 6 iron swing speed? I'm thinking of putting one in my 2 iron but I don't know what flex. I swing at 92-93 mph with my 6 iron.

88-89mph 6 iron SS. Flex feels perfect for me, but you may need to go for the 6.5 with your SS.

Anyone know what this shaft was supposed to deliver? What is the difference in the Reg PX and this? Lower ball flight, softer, better feel?
Lighter and less harsh. Success on both counts from everything I've read. Flex for flex PXi play softer too, which is most likely why they feel less harsh.

I was fitted for the PXi 6.0 shaft and have absolutely loved it. I have the same set up in an extra iron set up with PX 6.0 and when comparing the feel and stiffness of the shafts, the PXi wins hands down. It is sleeker, lighter, but most importantly feels amazing at impact.

Only knock on the PXi is cost. I wish it were cheaper!
