KBS Tour iron shafts --- Black nickel or Chrome?

Danieleken

Recommended Posts

I play the Nike VR Pro combo irons with dynamic golf shaft. I am planning on switching to KBS Tour shaft but I dont know if I should get the Black nickel or the chrome.

Are there any difference between the two based on performance? Also, this may sound as a stupid question but the Black nickel shaft is NOT graphite right? I tried searching for some close up pictures of the Black nickel but I cant really see if they are graphite or steel.

What do you think I should get between the two?

Thanks!

I just traded for a set of the KBS Tour black nickel shafts for a Scratch combo set that I just bought from the the guys in TN. The black nickel shafts are not graphite and I wouldn't expect any performance difference due to the finish. Here's the link to KBS that has some more info/pics. Later!~

I have the KBS black nickel shafts ( smoked ) in a set of Adams CB3 BLACK irons. I've had them for about 6 months now and they are starting to show some wear. Still like them but if you're anal about your clubs get the chrome.

Had the black nickel installed in the orignial VR blades. I play multiple times per week along with multiple range sessions, and the black nickel finish wore off where my clubs rubbed against my bag. I switched the black nickel out for the chrome version and couldn't be happier. Not sure if I was just too rough on the shafts, but if you are someone that plays often or your clubs are in/out of your bag a lot, or you walk your rounds, I'd go with the chrome shafts.

Other than that, I noticed zero performance difference between the two finishes. I still have the black nickel shafts laying around somewhere if you would like some pictures of the wear.

Best of luck!

Hi,

It would be great if you can show me some pictures of your old kbs black graphite shafts. It would really help me in making my decision :)

Kind regards

As you can see, almost every step has the black chrome worn off. The shafts are oriented into the playing position so you can see just how much of an effect rubbing on the bag had. Shafts still perform great, just couldn't stand how poorly they wore.

I thought I had just read a post that KBS will honor any black chrome shafts where the finish wears off. Have you contacted them?

Not a problem. Like I said the shafts perform well, just very disappointed in the finish.

The new black shafts from KBS, custom line also available in white and silver, are WAY more durable and are the same specs.

I haven't had the chance to see how these wear first hand, but I have heard similar things. Glad I could help nikegolf4!!

The custom line looks really nice. Are there any difference between them and the normal KBS Tour? Also, are they graphite or steel? Thank you!

Yep - pert near double the price - no performance difference though. They are steel - KBS to my knowledge does not make graphite shafts.

No, the black nickel is not graphite but you will have your playing partners asking you whether you are using a graphite shaft. It's annoying.

Ha, yeah that could be annoying. I realize it's not graphite, I am just worried about how the black nickel wears over time. Does it scrape/rub off?

There seems to be differing opinions on how the black nickel finish wears. In my experience, yes it will wear but not really in any noticeable manor. In my experience, the finish has never flaked off or completely become torn away from the shaft. Rather, there are some minor scrapes over time that are only noticeable upon close inspection. The only way I could see myself considering the black is if I had a black set of irons -- otherwise, I'd recommend the chrome, it's cheaper and should hold up a bit better. Of course, if you really like the look of the black -- get what you like.

Great, thanks! That's the most helpful feedback I've seen on that topic. Think I'll end up with the chrome.

A very good friend of mine has the black nickels, they do get nicked coming in and out of the bag or if you throw them around while playing, I really like the look, but he convinced me to get the C-Tapers...so I did, I really like the look as well, some people ask me if they are graphite...lol. Anyways, if you like them, go get fitted and buy them, just make sure you are aware that the paint can chip...good luck

+1 for the KBS Tour Custom line. Yes you're adding a few bucks per shaft, but I have the satin silver shafts in all of my wedges and couldn't be happier. Plus, the logo is printed onto the shaft - similar to the C-tapers.
