Wedge Bluing / Paint Fill Results

So it's cold here now and I've taken to tinkering with stuff. Saw a few posts on here about DIY paint fills and gunmetal so I decided to give it a shot. Test subject is current in da bag 64* Cleveland CG12. With 3* of bounce it's a scalpel of a golf club - strike precisely and pull off very useful shots that stop dead, but strike behind the ball and things get fat quickly.

Here's a (stock) pic of the club as it started out - mine is 64* but looked basically like this.

cg12-rtg.jpg

So I used 'citristrip' and a brass brush to knock out all the old paint - about 20 minutes with the citristrip on it and it comes right out with a stiff brush or edge of a razor.

After recommendation on here I ordered some Testor's enamel and decided to try gold to go along with the rust colored finish. Apply with a toothpick and just let it dry - don't worry about overfilling.

In my inexperience I was knocking off some of the extra paint with emery cloth (it turns out 00 steel wool is a much better alternative for paint removal) which started to knock away the brownish finish, one thing led to another and...dun dun dunnnn

So AFTER THAT I stuck the thing in the bathtub for about a week to restore some brownishness and the rust just got out of control. I didn't like that look as much so stripped it back down to metal and applied some Birchwood Casey bluing paste to it. I re-sanded and rubbed it in acetone to get any oil off before applying - this is after 3 quick applications in the span of about an hour.

I had to re-do the paint fills after all the scrubbing and whatnot so those aren't finished but the point is how easy it was to totally transform how the metal looks. If anyone has wanted to do this before but hasn't bothered - I can now personally say it's easy and pretty fun too. Materials are cheap - you can even get a neat vacuum base vise to hold stuff in place while you mess with it for about $20 off amazon.

A few tips on paint fill.

Fill up fully with paint, and wipe of left overs with a old credit card or similar.
Take a newspaper sheet, and soak it gently in acetone, then wrap it around the credit card and wipe again.
This way you want remove any of the paint down in the letters, only whats outside of them.

Its like Golf..... training, training, and then some day you get lucky

HJ, that's a great tip. Does it matter how many times you wrap the newspaper around the card (1x, 2x, more?)?

I use only 1 wrap, so the paper follows the card "body".
The paper is there to "hold" the acetone, and to soak up paint the acetone brings free.
- Change that paper often to prevent paint to get on again.
I pre-cut the news paper into small sheets who fits the credit card (using 2-3 sheets for each letter painted)

Do it in a place with good air circulation, breathing acetone vapors is no good.
