Well, I'm not really much of a Hogan disciple - Yeah, I know there are folks who think he had 'the' swing, and he has a cult following and all that, but I am more of a self-styled guy who got the fundamentals of swing, contact, and later strategy, and worked them into my game. Not bad for an old guy - you know, we never really buy into all that 'copy my swing' junk anyway......

So anyway, I'm playing along all summer and my hci is going down, down, down, and I'm feeling pretty large until about 1 week ago - when I totally lost my entire swing. Don't know if it was the sudden change to cold weather, or if it was the new shaft I put into my driver, or what -- all I know is I went from an average 8 over for a round, to 15-16 over, seemingly overnight. Worried sick about it... And so I had considered every option possible: new irons, new iron shafts, new balls, new grips, bag, selling the house and moving south, leaving my wife for Paula Creamer, you name it - anything to find out what was going wrong with my game.....

Today was no different. Horrible front nine, decent (but not remarkable) back nine, and worst of all - NO MONEY from my Sunday morning skins!

So anyway, a few of us decided to play an extra nine, and at that point, I remembered a video I saw recently of Hogan on the old Ed Sullivan show, and he was showing the audience how the golf swing works. 'Preposterous', I thought, but then I thought about the shoulder swinging, the easy rotation, and the easy engagement of the hips - 8 to 4, 9 to 3, etc, etc, till he got to 11 to 1, and him saying how easy the swing was. Great drill, and great for balance -- in fact I've even gotten other folks to do this (but didn't do it myself since I was too good for that stuff....)

So I thought "What the Heck, I've already lost my youngest's college education, may as well try it'. And I did. Before every shot (even the lobs to a short greenside landing). Before every drive, before every approach, and before my putts even (albeit a tad differently on the putts).

And guess what? It worked. I got relaxed. I got solid hits. I got a more balanced swing back from the dead --- in fact, it is as balanced as it has ever been. No effort. No tight forearms. Nor more second-guessing what I'm doing wrong. And I saved considerable money by not having to buy new equipment and sell my house....

So I won some money from a 3-capper (I'm only a 9'er) and I'm feeling large again..... You folks may just be onto something..

It absolutely does, despite the fact that's not how he swung.

Well, to my mind, that little drill accomplishes the most important piece - relaxation and looseness. I was at the point where the worse I got, the worse I got, and ended up with tight forearms, a hurt index finger, yipping my putts and my short irons, slicing the heck outta my drives (and I am not a slicer), etc. Going through the motions of this drill forced my upper body to relax and forced my shoulders, forearms, wrists, and hands to feel the swing again in a relaxed, tempo'ed fashion. And the result was immediate for me.

It is good for the idea of staying in synch and connected. Didn't he use belts for a period of time? Imagine belts strapped around him in that video.

38-39 yesterday. Cold and breezy here. The warm-up drill continues to salvage my poor execution.

Yeah, I can see the belt application to keep the arms/body unit intact.
