Distance changes when traveling

Recommended Posts

I searched for a similar thread and couldn't find one, if it exist please send it my wy.

When traveling from the Midwest to the coast (south Carolina) what should I expect for distance changes? For example a 150 yard swing under normal conditions in the Midwest travels ____ in South Carolina?

Thank you

Define normal conditions. If you compare a 70F, 40%RH, 10mph SW breeze day in Columbus, OH to the same conditions in Charleston, SC there's not going to be any discernible difference in your carry distance with a 6-iron. The only difference is 900 hundred feet of elevation and that's a pretty minor effect on the order of single-digit number of yards, if that.

Humidity will have almost no impact on the distance the ball travels. Higher humidity might make the ball go a yard or two longer due to the air being less dense, but that is not enough to make any difference.

Altitude- I generally say that 2000 ft will make 1 club difference. Coming from Lincoln, NE (I assume, given your 'location') at about 1200 feet, you're looking at about 3/4 club of change, in my experience.

Temperature- I generally say that 15 degrees F will make 1 club difference.

For me, my "standard" conditions are 85 degrees and 200 ft elevation. I calculate all my yardages from there when traveling. So when I played Edgewood Tahoe, the conditions were no wind, 65 degrees and 6200 feet elevation; I picked up two clubs.

Thank you, being in Nebraska weather varies 40-100 degrees during golf season, so at least I have some good references to make good choices.

The old saying goes, "One more at the shore".

Playing on the coast or even the hot humid summers of the interior carolinas you need an extra club.

One more at the shore is a good rule of thumb at the coast. Also, if you are not use to the bermuda grass then, it will effect your role out distances. The ball is not going roll as far in the fairway if the burmada is not dormant and soft.

Herdman- you won't need one more club because it's hot and humid. Humidity will have a negligible effect and heat will prompt the ball to go farther.

However, coming from elevation, as I mentioned above, will prompt you to add clubs at sea level. If you're coming from Denver...better add 3 clubs.

It took a few trips for me to realize that it is a percentage adjustment, and not one more or less club. It might be one club for a 100 yard shot but it would be two clubs from 200 yards. When I go from Colorado's 5000 feet to Florida's sea level, I adjust 10%. Big difference in thought process.
