My knee kills!!

swingking

Recommended Posts

Hey all. I'm new.

I've been finding that I have knee pain, it may be from carrying the bag, or my swing, or just that I'm getting old. But it's really throwing off my game.

I've been using a BFST wrap, they are great. That seems to help a lot. But if I don't use it everyday, It just kills!

I was wondering if anyone else has this pain and if they do, how do you deal with it?

I've iced, used the BFST wrap, tensor, knee brace. And the pain just doesn't go away!

Here are the specs on the BFST wrap, great little thing. I love it http://www.kingbrand.com/Knee-Injury-Treatment.php?REF=Boris1011

And well, icing is icing, and tensor bandages are the same. I've been using a mcdavid knee brace, one my son uses.

Please, if you have any ideas or comments, please. Get back to me

Have you got checked out by a doc ?

Seriously you might have some issues in there, but none of the solutions are cheap or fast. WIsh you luck.. Look at a donjoy playmaker.. better built then an a standard mcdavid. Besides you need to know the issue to get the correct brace anyways.

I'm on my GameReady ice machine ( cyrotherapy and compression) at the moment :) so you know my vote

so arthritis then ? does your knee make all the popping creaking sounds with little to no pain ? that would be arthritis.

Sounds like you have lots of pain.. previous injury to meniscus maybe ? I find meniscus pain a SOB, hopefully you have some left because it does not exactly heal itself very well and an MRI is pretty much needed on soft tissue to tell.

Have you talked to the doc about cortisone ?

I can really sympathies with you and your pain, since sept 2011 i have been suffering with knee pain, after x-rays and visits to the doctor i was diagnosed with osteo-arthitis in my knee, the only long term solution i was told was a knee replacement, but was told that i am not ready for it yet, since then my golf has suffered.I have had to leave the golf club where i was a member for 15 years they would not allow me to use a buggy in comps etc Walking I could only manage 9 holes at the most and since then pain has also moved to my hip so eventually its either give up golf or have 2 replacements. I have also had physio which really did not help.
I am afraid its all down to old age creeping up on us all,I wish you all the best

.....i'm 67 and have been playing for 55 years but have been getting knee pains only lately so i went to my orthopedic doctor and it turns out i have the early stages of the common kind of arthritis..ostreo--something...

..he gave me some meds--arcoxia--for when the pain is severe but also advised increased walking whenever possible and to use the meds only when the pain is very uncomfortable..

i find myself not using it much and just increase my walking as much as i can and it helps..

BTW eating curry also helps..

First off, I would go to a doctor to get it looked it. Saying it hurts because you are getting older doesn't seem like that logical of a answer to me but then again I didnt spend years in medical school.

I am 26 and have frequent knee pain in my left knee (which of course is the knee which gets the most torque/pressure/etc from my golf swing). For me it started while running. I went through periods about 18 months ago where my knee would get locked bent, it only felt 'ok' when pressure was put on it (seems backwards) and laying down, specifically in bed, was miserable. The pain I mention above was only that severe after running. Golf, however, still affected it just to much more mild degree. I would find myself not wanting to walk the golf course and generally limping around after some golf swings (I felt like Tiger Woods but not nearly as good and with probably much less knee pain).

The Doctor told me I either had a tear in my meniscus or it was aggravated/inflamed... almost like a bruise. I took about 8 weeks off from physical activity and the first time back running it happened again within the first mile. Now I wasn't about to get a MRI because I knew even it was torn I wasn't going to do anything in the near future. Laterally my knee felt great and ski season was upon us. After that, I had a upcoming wedding which I wasn't about to have surgery while trying to plan and get ready for.... So that led me to this golf season and to my solution

A friend of my mine had pain fairly similar to mine. He started running Nike Frees and other 'barefoot' style shoes and has been pain free since. I decided what the heck, the shoes I have previously been fitted for obviously aren't helping. First run in Nike Frees and immediately no pain. The issue still was there for me on the golf course though. That's when I read about True Linkswear and their barefoot style shoes. I decided if it worked for running, maybe, just maybe, it will help out my knee on the course. Sure enough, no pain. Since this discovery I am now running exclusively in Nike Frees, I play golf in True Linkswear or Vivobarefoot golf shoes and I have a side pair of Vivobarefoot shoes for walking/strolling around. My knee virtually never hurts. Whether it was aggravated or torn I do not know so maybe it was just aggravated and just needed more time to heal. But for what I do know, I played golf in a pair of Ashworth Cardiffs recently and the knee was back at it. Being a pain in the a** on the golf course.

I didn't mean to thread jack, but, in a nut shell, if the pain is only on the golf course, could it be the shoes you are wearing? Obviously barefoot style shoes are not for everyone, but, orthopedic insoles can be. Possibly the golf shoes you are wearing are not providing enough support/alignment/etc for your posture, walking style, legs. Might be worth a try.

RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation) for any acute injury pain.

Heat and anti-inflammatories (if cleared by your doctor) for chronic pain.

Well, this is quite the response! Thanks everyone! The doctor said it was to do with my ligaments, he suggested RICE (thank you kellygreen) But when I brought up the idea of a knee brace, he said it wouldn't help. Finally. The idea of the BFST wrap, he thought it was the best idea ever, it's the same treatment they offer at the physiotherapist. So if SilverBullets and jmvargas. If you need relief, try one of these wraps, they work extremely well. Thank you everyone!

Deep squats.

I'm not kidding. I tend to lift in the off-season, and whenever I start squatting again, my knee starts feeling better. It feels better when I run, and feels better when I golf. I really think that it builds up stability, maintains flexibility. My crackpot theory: when you start squatting, especially with a heavy load, your knee builds up muscle/stability exactly where you need it to compensate for where your knee is weak.

If anyone tells you "deep squats are bad for your knee", ask them to prove it.

Here's a trainer talking about it (ignore the stupid website name. It's a good article). . .

http://www.lookgreatnaked.com/articles/archive/are_deep_squats_bad_for_your_knees.htm

And here's "Hans & Franz" on what is really meant by deep. . .

http://stronglifts.com/how-deep-should-you-squat-anyway/

If you have a lot of options, find a trainer at a gym who will teach you proper deep-squatting technique. If you don't have many options, buy a kettlebell, and youtube videos for "goblin/goblet squat".

For arthritis ?
That's gonna hurt.

You are right strong quads reduces the speed of arthritis coming on.
Strong muscles = knee works better.

Aleve for a week would help.
Ice is the most important if it is swelling.

If it truly is your ligaments..PDL,MDL,ACL.. braces do help . Obviously if it's a partial tear or strain you might want to limit the motion not to futher damage the ligament. The playmaker brace will cover all those L's I mentioned. Remember the ligaments also provide stability to the knee, without the stability you risk meniscus damage as well. Do keep the upper leg muscles strong.. they provide further support/strength to the ligaments.

[/quote]Well, he never said he had arthritis.

And, I don't know if it's going to hurt. The first couple might, but it might feel better overall. That's what happens with me, and I PROBABLY have arthritis. I have a surgically repaired knee, and a 20-year old tear in the meniscus of the other knee.

Also, if it hurts too much. . .don't do it.

Before I go to drugs, wraps, surgery or whatever. . .I'm going to try strengthening the joint.

I tore my left miniscus while skiing.Luckily(knock on wood)it is asymptomatic except when i am stupid enough to place weight on it by bending down and leaning on it.I take high quality liquid glucosamine/condrotin daily.I take an Alleve a couple of times/week but that it is always for some other pain.
I have a number of friends who have torn their ACL while skiing and my daughter has partially torn her mcl a couple of times and had to wear a brace during her recovery periods . Mcl have sufficient blood supply so they they can usually repair themselves, but ACL do not and usually have to be surgically repaired. However ,about 5 years ago i met a terrific skier who also was considering trying out for the professional lacrosse league. He said that he a torn acl and was doing fine without any surgery. He did add that the muscles surrounding his knees were very strong and he maintained their strength
I have another friend who is one of the top ski instructors in the country and a former Olympic skier. He was worried that he was going to have to have knee replacement because of his knee arthritis. Before considering knee replacement he had a treatment called "prolotheraphy" done. This controversial treatment consists of a series of saline injections into the affected area. This causes an inflammatory response by the body and helped regenerate some tissue. Last time i talked with him ,he was doing much better.
Ice , rest , elevation and compression are always the conservative first steps
Finally I developed heel spurs and subsequent Achilles micro tears from running.I have worn custom orthotics for over 2 decades in all shoes. They certainly align my feet and probably also positively affect my knees

Always a good idea, but deep squats for Arthritis is likely to cause more problems than benefits.

A lot of times a steroid injection and strengthening the leg muscles can fix a lot of problems. I had a knee injury a few years ago and after about a year, i went to an ortho surgeon. He gave me an intra-articular steroid injection. I then got back to deep squats with low reps and higher weights and improved quickly.

You know, maybe I'm too much of a curmudgeon, but while several responses have been helpful(and informative to my situation), I think this may be an ad disguised as a post. 4 posts only in this thread, swingking links to a kingbrands site(in two different original posts), poster from Canada, business is located in Canada.

The standard knee brace will not help osteoarthritis. Only one that MIGHT help is a custom offloading brace your orthopedic doc would have to prescribe. I used one for my left knee before I had knee replacement on it. I need to have my right knee replaced too. Outside of this, about the only relief you can get is one of those neoprene type sleeve braces to keep heat on the joint and a lot of ibuprofen.

I would imagine you have some bone on bone contact in your knee which is what is causing the pain. What an offloading brace does is align your knee to help alleviate it. Works for some, doesn't work for others. Worked for me until my knee was replaced. Now, with knee replacement, I am pain free. No more braces and no more pain.

  • 1 month later...

I had Pateller tendonitis really bad in both knees a couple of years ago. I went to the Chiropractor and and got cold laser treatment and iced my knee's at home. Worked well for that specific problem.
